The Good Wife: Season 5, Episode 18 - All Tapped Out

Welcome to The Good Pod,

where today we're talking about The Good

Wife, Season Five, Episode Eighteen,

all tapped out.

I'm one of your hosts,

the host with a beard, Jason Reed.

Going to the other host without a beard,

Marissa Garza.

Marissa, you good?

I'm good, Jason.

You good?

I'm good.

I'm good.

Good.

Good.

Yeah, here we are.

You know,

Episode Two or Three Outside of the Will

tragedy.

Trying to make it through.

I feel like they're doing a good job

of kind of like...

slowly transitioning us out of the will

stuff like this this episode wasn't all

about will right but it definitely had

like will's name was mentioned a lot so

it's like i would say like the aftershocks

of will are still happening like every now

and yet it's not all the time yeah

it's just like every now again and we're

like three away from will's death and

we're like three away from the end of

the season yeah so this is like the

midpoint of our post will season five

light yeah i'm just kind of waiting for

that like that the first episode where

will is not mentioned at all like it's

just kind of like we're back to kind

of uh normal operations as as normal as

we can get around here do you think

that's gonna happen this season or do you

think it's gonna have to wait till season

six

I think I'll wait till season six.

I think probably, like, you know,

maybe episode two of season six will be

maybe the first, like,

totally non-will-mentioned episode, maybe.

So we'll see.

We'll see when we get there.

We'll remark on it once it happens.

But, yeah,

before we dive too deep into this episode,

I want to remind you of some free

and easy ways that you can help this

podcast.

a little something too,

we can do that as well.

Marissa,

I also have another thing to talk about.

With a segment, perhaps?

Segment, maybe.

Maybe.

Jason segment.

Yeah.

So, you know, I was like, you know,

Marissa, my friends.

She's got it.

Got a lot going on.

It's like,

what can I do for Marissa that she

might appreciate?

What's happening?

What can happen here?

So I was like, what can I do?

What's happening?

So I got a little something.

Jason.

And I can make it work.

I was telling Jason just how much my

life is falling apart and I'm having

another crisis.

So this might hit a little.

Who knows?

We'll see.

Who knows?

Hold on.

I don't know if you can see this

yet.

Oh my God.

Okay.

Yes, I can see this.

From Cameo?

This is a message for Marissa from Judge

Trump.

No way.

I'm out of chambers currently,

so I'm not wearing my robe.

I'm actually also not in New York

currently, as you can see,

or Chicago where the show took place.

Anyway, you know,

Jason wanted me to reach out to you

just to say courage, you know, keep going,

man.

It's hard.

Life is.

I can tell you.

And I hear you run a podcast for

The Good Wife and I would love to

be on it.

So yes, I hope this will, um,

turn things around for you and, um,

keep doing what you do.

All right.

Um, fantastic.

All right.

Bye.

Oh,

I'll figure out how to get ahold of

you.

Um, I'll send you my email.

Okay.

Bye.

And, uh, on the podcast now that, no,

I'm just kidding.

Um, yeah.

So I was just like,

what can I do for Arisa to make,

like, pepper up a little bit?

Um,

will i will tell you there's not like

a whole bunch of people from the good

wife on cameo so it's like okay i

was like hey we both love judge abernathy

hold on hold on that's like thank you

so much i can't now this is one

very unfair to do for me right before

the podcast but also very nice and i

really appreciate it and judge abernathy

is my favorite and you know that and

oh

Yes, I made her cry on the podcast,

y'all.

It's been so many years.

No one knew I had.

Oh, that's amazing, though.

That's amazing.

Thank you so much.

Of course, of course.

I was like,

what can I do to maybe lift Marissa's

spirits?

Just a little behind the scenes.

Just in the writing of this,

I was like,

maybe Judge Abernathy give Marissa some,

like, you know, words of wisdom.

I kind of thought it would come up

with, like, a little more, but hey,

I'm not unhappy with it, but...

you see it on the podcast that that

works that works because before the

podcast i was like jason's life is falling

apart and now i think we might need

to take a an emotional break you'll be

fine you're fine i'll be fine i'll be

fine uh and also i had to sneak

in the last bit of like and also

do you want to come on the podcast

So it's like he said, yeah,

I have not like reaching back out there.

But, you know,

I've learned through podcasting,

not just for this, but in general,

like never taking ones.

Sure.

I'll come to your podcast.

Seriously.

So we'll see what comes of all that.

I didn't I didn't mean for him to

say that on the on the thing,

but it's like, OK, sure.

You said it.

Fine.

I was just more of like a side

note.

You want to come to the sidebar?

You want to come to the podcast?

But he answered in the video.

So that's great, too.

So we'll see what comes of that,

if anything comes of that.

Judge Abernathy.

We're going to have to give blood.

Yeah, we're going to have to give blood,

donate to different causes and charities

in his name.

Oh my gosh.

Yeah, so we'll see what comes of that,

if anything.

But yeah, I was like,

what can I do?

I forgot Cameo existed for a minute.

I was like, oh yeah,

let me see what's on Cameo.

You know, he was there.

Thank you.

That's awesome because we both really like

Judge Abernathy.

We haven't seen Abernathy in a hot minute,

so I'm hoping to see him again soon.

Yes.

yes the magic of the pod thank you

jason really thank you so much i will

cry more off of the times you're very

welcome uh that's probably why i was

glitching so much in the pre-show because

i was trying to pull it up we

were lagging glitching also because i was

behind the scenes like trying to pull it

up and whenever you start pulling stuff up

and alternate windows while you're stream

yarding it always glitches i was like

that's probably why i don't say that

though anyway

ah one of these days i will be

able to repay you for this so thank

you so much i really appreciate it no

problem no problem um with that out the

way this was not what i thought he

said he had something to say but it

wasn't that it's not what i thought but

i know he has something to say as

we get into the podcast oh yeah that

was yeah that was not uh that's not

what i was talking about we'll get to

that we'll get to it but uh yeah

let's get into the episode

All right, everyone.

Well,

we are starting back in the NSA office.

Our NSA boys are back.

And we see this time it opens with

Zach Woods.

Yeah, Zach Woods, Mr.

Office in Silicon Valley.

Yes.

Yeah.

And he,

and also like really great satire on

social media.

But he is being questioned in a lie

detector test.

And this seems to be like part of

the routine,

asking questions like what his name is.

Apparently you have to pick a number

before you start doing the thing,

all of this stuff.

And he's gone through the questions and

then he gets asked,

have you ever removed confidential

materials from the workplace?

And his little, his ears go, huh?

The what now?

says no yeah it was like oh i

don't and so he got finishes the test

gives his urine sample apparently this is

all part of the regular routine of work

and joins the joins the boys who are

still listening to their favorite soap

opera aka oh it's just oh it's just

phone calls

Yeah,

it was interesting because last time we

saw the NSA boys,

Zach Woods was not there.

I guess he was busy doing either the

office or Silicon Valley or whatever.

He wasn't there, but now he's back.

And now instead of just two NSA guys,

we have a whole bullpen.

We have four NSA guys.

yeah well and i guess that's to show

like how much the the warrant has expanded

like how many people because right now

they're listening in on clark and carrie

not alicia like directly but they are

talking about alicia and like how alicia's

been off since both death and clark is

over at locker gardener talking about some

joint client agreement he's like hey

carrie so like diane

me when I was gonna come in and

talk about the merger they're like the

what the who the what and Carrie's like

this must be coming from Alicia and

Clark's like I don't want to be this

guy but I need to just tell you

Alicia's been kind of out of it and

you're the managing partner so you get to

make decisions here and if we merge with

Lockhart Gardner they're not going to want

to keep us

Yeah, and I was like, Clark?

You don't want to be that guy,

but I feel like you're being that guy.

It's almost like, you know women, Carrie.

She's too emotional,

too much in an emotional state to handle

things on her own.

Like, really, bro?

Really?

I mean, yes,

that's kind of true in this case, but...

In this moment, she is a bit distracted.

It's like, you know women.

I mean,

last episode we saw Alicia trying to

soldier on,

trying to operate as if things were

normal, but she couldn't hack it.

She couldn't do it.

And so first of all,

This is interesting because, yes,

also shame on Yulia, kind of,

for agreeing to mergers without talking to

Carrie at all.

Because she never mentioned to Carrie that

she was even talking to Diane about this.

And the fact that now Diane is letting

it out of the bag to Clark as

if they just kind of knew that it

was supposed to be a thing is like,

yeah kind of shame on you alicia we

know you're going through a lot but i

think i could have mentioned to carrie

that you know we're thinking about i i

want to consider this proposal from diane

even just a heads up like hey so

diana and i had this conversation i don't

really remember any of it because i was

grieving but maybe we'll talk about it

like just let them know that that like

this is near she hasn't even done that

because also we have to remember like

carrie has been

backing up alicia for a long time now

like while like making sure she's in

involved in all these conversations like

this is the point where if carrie wasn't

carrie it could have blown up into like

more law partner drama

Yeah, I mean, listen,

Carrie showed his ass a little bit too

last episode.

So, you know,

things were a little fraught between them

last episode because of the whole, like,

Jeffrey Grant's father of it all.

Yes, yes, yes.

With Carrie last episode.

But I feel like,

but Alicia started agreeing to this merger

before all that even started.

yeah exactly like alicia that was a little

foul of you to be out here like

making business decisions without carrie

you know which which leads carrie to have

his kind of attitude he does in this

episode because now he's heard from clark

about this whole merger business uh so

it's like oh like so early in the

partnership things are already turning a

little sour for these two

yes yes uh so the nsa boys overhear

this conversation and then jeff is like

hey uh did anyone get asked like this

new question in their lie detector test

and they're like no no but if you

did boys are dumb that's all i have

to say boys are dumb because the response

was you got to fight for your right

to do things with your genitalia basically

Like I didn't understand at all.

I didn't understand why we had to go

there.

Like, okay, sure.

Cool.

whatever uh then another phone call comes

in alicia and they're like she's still in

bed i'm like are you like listening how

do you know are you watching her also

because she doesn't answer the phone she

is still in bed but finn is calling

alicia and saying they took my computer

like i went i left my desk i

came back and all the post-it notes were

in different places so i know they took

it and alicia's like well we gotta talk

to castro about it

and like i'll go do it and she's

like no no no don't be your own

lawyer i'll be there i'm i was just

on my way and she's literally just like

getting out of bed

Back to the NSA.

I forget the character's name,

but he's been the NSA guy who's been

there most of the time.

He says, oh, yeah,

they did ask me a new question.

They asked me,

do you know of a co-worker who took

confidential materials home?

And this is, one,

a different question than was asked to NSA

Jeff at the beginning,

because he was asked,

did you take them home?

So they know that he didn't.

He is the one.

And Jeff's colleague says, I said, no,

was that wrong?

Like, should I?

No, no.

Do I know someone that's taken

confidential materials?

Back to the phones.

We hear Diane and Carrie on the phone.

Carrie is like out the gate,

like addressing this from the start.

And Diane's like, well,

we considered a merger.

It was like,

it would benefit both of us.

And Carrie's like, nah, nah,

you're overextended.

or we're overextended you're mismanaged

this is a totally different situation oh

yeah because i was like come on carrie

you're like we're both we're both

overextending he's like yeah we're

supposed to be over extended because we're

a startup you guys are just mismanaged

that's why you're over extended like i was

like oh damn well even the nsa guys

were like oh man he's different he's so

yeah he's he's pissed he's mad because i

mean he's heard now that there's a merger

going on behind his back so of course

you're gonna call diane be like what the

hell diane and it's like i mean

but like shouldn't we know like wouldn't

that be cool if you came back and

you know carrie carrie's out here like

okay well listen if if this is gonna

happen like and he's not even shutting the

door on this completely he's like if this

is gonna happen we get three years of

chum hum profits by ourselves like we are

the only ones yeah for three first three

years of whatever agreement we come to and

dan's like uh i don't know about all

that like what

Let's keep talking.

Let's keep talking about it.

She's like, oh, we'll give you one.

And Carrie's like, I'm not negotiating.

I'm stating.

And in the middle of all of this,

Jason, in the middle of all of this,

there is a knock at Diane's door.

and who do we see who we haven't

seen in so many so many seasons so

many episodes well she actually goes she

like all that stuff but she goes back

into a meeting with all the partners no

he knocks on her door and says hey

it's time to go and she's like oh

okay yeah and then i did not clock

that at all he is there don't let

julius be invisible to you too oh julius

is back guys listen

Am I saying that, you know,

was it worth Will's death to welcome

Julius back onto the landscape?

I'm not saying that.

But I'm not not saying that.

You know what I mean?

Like,

the one thing happened right after the

other.

Will's dead and Julius is back.

I'm just like, I mean...

I mean, listen,

we know this show is rife with

behind-the-scenes feuds.

Was there a Michael Boatman,

Josh Charles feud we didn't know about?

Because, I mean, the one man leaves,

the next man comes right back.

I'm just like, Julius!

I was like, oh, my God,

Julius is here.

Julius is back.

Julius is back.

Yeah, that was, like, my first...

So she's on the phone.

She's, like, in it with Carrie.

Julius knocks on the door.

Like, time to go.

I was like... And then Carrie says...

uh,

Alicia's out sick and I'm making decisions

while she's gone.

And I was like, Oh, and then now,

yeah.

And then we go into the partners meeting.

Hmm.

And if we remember, like, last episode,

David Lee,

David Lee is David Lee-ing pretty hard.

He wants control.

He wants the situation.

Diana's like,

I am going to fight for myself, basically,

with my own self-interest.

I'm not trying to do anything for Will's

legacy.

Like, yes, to a certain point,

but I'm going to do this on my

own.

So she walks in and she's like, hey,

so I don't think we should really, like,

talk about the merger so much anymore like

let's let things like calm down and david

lee like could not be like the little

vulture man that he is he's like really

like he's like a little perched up on

her shoulder really interesting why is

flora goggles like not playing ball and

then julius if there's anything julius is

gonna agree to it is not making a

decision very quickly it's like yes i

think we should wait diane yes and that

is everyone julius's contribution well and

julius explains like as his like

reintroduction bag is like hey and i've

been in the new york office yeah

that no one really knew existed,

was talked about maybe once or twice,

but apparently it's a thing.

Like we have an office in New York

and that's where I've been.

So just to explain my absence for all

these many months,

I've been off screen in New York,

but I've been around,

but I've been in New York.

I was just like, okay,

we're just gonna explain it that way.

Cool, cool, cool.

And yeah, and so it's interesting because

Diane didn't bring up the merger.

David Lee brought up the merger.

He's like,

so I thought we'd start talking about

these merger talks.

And Diane's like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

We're not doing that anymore.

It's not happening.

And David's like, oh, that's interesting.

Well, I thought in the spirit of merger,

um i did find another suitor yeah i

know it was like oh my gosh like

it's like he was hiding him it was

like he was there like the whole time

it's like a chair turned around he's like

i found another suitor and like it's as

if dave lewis can use turns i was

like i'm here baby

It was very weird.

It was weird.

He's there.

And, of course,

he does his usual Lewis Canning

introduction.

And Diane has had enough.

She's just like, oh, my God.

Here we go again.

Here we go again.

And he's also Lewis Canning-y so hard over

Will Duck.

He's like...

i just i can't believe that i'm like

this this close to his office and like

i just really respected him and i know

he's looking down on us saying don't make

any dumb decisions oh man i was like

see this this is perfect like this is

this is so great like this is lewis

canning to a t like he's he's he's

fit he's talking about his condition he

tried to like show sympathy while also

like being self-serving

Yeah, and David Lee is like, oh,

and we won't discriminate against you for

your condition.

Oh, no.

And Diane is like, he bankrupted us.

Do you remember?

Do you remember?

That was last season, y'all.

That was not even that long ago.

We were struggling because of him.

Because, I mean, lest we forget,

Lewis Canning had taken over all their

debts for a certain period and was trying

to, like,

take them to court and force them into

these decisions of, you know,

trying to bankrupt them, basically.

So, yeah, I was like,

did all of you forget?

Like,

he was the cause of our discontent for

a season.

I would say he is also the reason

we have Clark.

So I'll take it.

But, you know, yes.

But he does say he's like, look,

you have something that I have.

You need something that I have.

So why not at least have the conversation?

I have infrastructure in New York and L.A.

And it was like David Lee had gotten

an A plus on a paper that nobody

else in the class had gotten because the

man sits up and looks at Diane and

thinks,

See, I told you.

And here's the thing.

We don't see much of the...

uh machinations of this right like we

don't see a vote we don't see anything

it's just like he's he's here like yes

it's a basically a done deal and diane

can't really do anything about it because

i guess it all comes down to anyone

here can make any decision if we just

vote on it like i guess that's what

they've decided as like a group of like

diana has no real power here you know

excuse me could be

It could be a statement about women in

power in high profile situations because

she was only respected and heard when she

was standing next to Will outside the

proximity.

She's still managing partner.

She's still named partner.

She's still all of these things on paper,

but they have no respect for her or

don't see that power because Will's not

here anymore.

yeah but i i also think they've made

decisions while will and diane were both

there where like they've the board of

partners yeah yeah yeah yeah has also done

things in in both will and diane's

interests but honestly it does mostly come

against diane like throughout the series

most of the decisions we've made have come

at the like

expense of Diane.

We're either going to vote her out of

partnership in general,

but that will lead that.

But it's just like,

we're going to vote her out because of

this.

We're going to vote her out because it's

happened a few times now in this series.

The term I think is called the glass

cliff or something like that.

But it's like where women are put in

positions of power

Not because they deserve it,

even though Diane rightly does in this

situation,

but they're used as pawns of power by

men in this situation.

And so I think as much as I

loved Will, I still love Will,

but there is the system at work here

still of him using a woman when he

needed her.

And he did the same thing to Alicia.

When we need you, we'll call you in.

When not, we don't really care.

Well,

and we heard that that's kind of how

Diane got her partnership is that it was

like Stern did that because of this like

sexual harassment suit.

It was just like, see,

we have women's name partners here.

That was basically like.

reason she's the lockhart on lockhart

garner now she has come in and shown

her worth and shown her value but she

it only came about because of something

that someone else needed yeah so yeah

that's that's for sure true and it is

shown again that diane doesn't have like

but that's all kind of in contracts and

all that as a name partner she does

not have any more power than anyone else

yes right she just has her name on

the building she can still get outvoted

for every any little thing here

yes yeah votes votes votes matter people

in case you're wondering especially in

this um midterm election year yeah um yes

so it's kind of like diane you have

no power here like lewis canning is here

and he's now our new name partner yes

sidebar in the real world there was the

opening of the obama presidential center

here in chicago illinois and uh hillary

rodham clinton was an attendant and she

was in like she was wearing her sunglasses

and had like this big hat on like

protecting herself from the sun and all of

this stuff and i was just like diane

diane would be sitting right next to you

lady she'd be right there

Anyway, okay, so over at the SA's office,

we got Castro teaching,

teaching the people,

teaching his newbies about how to be a

good prosecutor.

And he says,

and this is like this line,

it could have been written for the Gilded

Age, because he says,

The truth must dazzle gradually,

else every man be blind.

And I was like, yes, okay.

But that is also from an Emily Dickinson

play.

So he's very well read, or poem.

He's very well read.

He knows his things.

But he's using,

he's very hoity-toity about his teaching

to these newbies.

Well,

and you can tell that Jimmy Castro loves

to, like,

lord over information he just got from

Google fifteen minutes ago.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And then dress it up in the fancy

word.

He's very, you know,

for those that are of the survivor

parlance,

he's very like Benjamin Coach Wade.

I have these words of wisdom that I

just looked up a minute ago,

and I'm going to talk to you as

if I have known them forever and used

them in all of my life in any

way of a facet.

And I want to, like,

he's an expert mansplainer,

just for

was like yes yes yeah yeah yeah he

would walk the monk's path to the coffee

like you know what i mean like it's

one of those uh alicia walks in basically

this whole situation is castro is like

explaining when to display evidence to a

jury and how to do so and the

evidence here is a bunch of photos from

a shooting and this kind of gets alicia

like she's not seeing will she's not

seeing jimmy in the situation but she's

definitely like

zooming in on blood splatters on pools of

blood on things like that so she's still

in this aftershock ptsd type of world he's

affected yeah yeah she's definitely

affected um and then jimmy castro jimmy

castro who the are you to go and

ask alicia florick am i a disappointment

to your husband who the hell who the

hell cares i don't care and why would

she know she doesn't know she's like i

don't know

It's like, you know,

I've tried to call your husband.

He's not answering my phone calls.

He's like, I mean,

I guess because he doesn't like you or

he's just busy.

I don't know.

He's the governor of the state of

Illinois.

I mean,

it just shows how much importance Jimmy

puts on himself, right?

Yes.

He's not,

he's not dating to call me back.

I mean, yes, this was Peter's former job,

but in the grand scheme of things,

the state's attorney of this like county

might not rain high on Peter's priority

list.

This isn't like though.

like this this is like the county so

uh but at the same time you know

he does have a whole state to govern

too and he's got a lot of things

going on so it's okay jimmy castro if

he's not answering the phone and also you

don't have to make alicia feel bad about

it like you could just figure it out

uh and alicia goes did you take his

computer and castro's like i don't know

did i take his computer

And we learn through this that there's an

internal standards unit that is

investigating all offense cases,

not just Jimmy's case.

So this is kind of ballooned into this

larger thing.

And Castro makes it clear to Alicia, like,

this is something that was put in place

by your husband.

Like, just FYI,

if you're going to get complaining about

it, don't look at me.

well i mean he's he's putting like well

this unit this like this procedure of

looking into things was started by peter

but make no question this is a witch

hunt yes for finn because uh jimmy tried

to get him solely on the jeffrey grant

stuff and finn put a stop to that

last episode of like no you were very

much in on the jeffrey grant stuff so

don't don't be coming here with that

nonsense and so now it's just like well

we'll just find anything to get rid of

you all of the things

We'll just make it all a part of

the Jeffrey Grant stuff.

As long as I can say that I

fired the prosecutor of the Jeffrey Grant

case,

I don't need to say that I fired

him because of the Jeffrey Grant case.

I can just say I fired the prosecutor

responsible for the Jeffrey Grant case.

That's all I need to do.

So that's what I'm looking for now.

Yes.

I just want to, like, Finn,

what was that you were saying on this

episode about Jimmy being your bestie?

He would never do anything to you?

Yeah, yeah, you went to college before.

Yeah, yeah.

Now here we are.

Power corrupts me sometimes.

I don't know.

I wouldn't know.

I don't know.

So, okay.

Back at Florigangos, Carrie and Clark.

This is so funny.

This is so funny to me.

Clark's like, Carrie, he won't talk to me.

He won't talk to me.

And Carrie's like, who?

Who won't talk to you?

He's like, oh, he's at your desk.

Go talk to him.

kid!

It's just this kid,

and he's got this piece of paper,

and it says,

I need to meet you outside.

So they get in the elevator,

and Jeff is in the elevator.

NSA Jeff, not Killer Jeff,

but NSA Jeff is in the elevator,

and he's basically, like, this again,

I was like,

why did you think this was a good

idea, Jeff?

Because he goes, and he's like,

I need a lawyer.

And I'm like,

did you realize these are the people

you're listening to all the time?

Well, and poor Zach Woods, because, like,

if I had Zach Woods' like

look and presence like if i if i

ever got into the elevator zach was just

like in the corner staring at me i

i'd probably like because does clark and

carrie get on the elevator because it's

like who the f is this guy like

yeah well they're like they're like okay

we're gonna go downstairs we're gonna meet

somebody outside and then the guy like

it's almost like if you say the words

i need a lawyer around a lawyer they're

like oh we're in now you know what

i mean they're like this guy this is

the guy

It's like, oh, so you're the guy.

But is Zach Woods being as tall and

pale and gangly as he is?

Like, I'd be questioning, too,

if I got an elevator with Zach Woods,

like, what are you doing here?

What do you want?

I do.

Nathan Lane's face in that moment was

quite hilarious to me,

even though I can't see behind my eyes.

I do remember it.

And he's like, okay, here's the deal.

So they're kind of on to me.

And I did take a flash drive from

the NSA and put it into my home

computer.

Okay.

I need to say, and anyone I've been,

like,

I've been a boss supervisor of in the

past.

I say this all the time.

And I'm pretty sure it's because I've

watched the show so much or shows like

it.

But never mix work and home devices.

Like, do not.

do not do it and everyone's like oh

but it's so convenient and all i have

to and i'm like this is why you

do this is this is why because all

he did was like i'm gonna use this

flash drive from work and i'm gonna put

a valentine on it and i'm gonna put

in my my computer and

It's like, oh,

you think that the files on the NSA

drive might have a tracker on it and

they might be able to see what IP

address the computer said?

You know what I mean?

Like, just think about it.

Just think about it.

Well, and it made me question Jeff.

I was like, Jeff,

are you telling the truth?

Yeah, that's what's up.

Weird, because that's a dumb thing to do.

Like, oops,

I put a valentine on this flash drive

and it's some of the same files that

we saw our defense strategies are on it.

Oops.

Yeah.

yeah it's like was this also like a

plant to like blow something up i don't

know by the end of this episode i

think i'm like i just think jeff's dumb

i think that's the thing i think this

was legit he really didn't mean to take

home like sensitive information but he's a

dummy and accidentally did it

So they're riding this elevator up and

down.

It gets to the ground floor.

Alicia is there.

Everyone, like,

Clark and Carrie at this point have had

their, like, oh, my God, Alicia's kind of,

you know, off the rails.

Like, she's a little unstable.

Also the smurger talk or whatever.

So she walks into the middle of this

whole thing.

And the next thing out of NSA Jeff's

mouth is the NSA is no joke.

Like, you cannot say anything.

You cannot do anything.

Cause we, we store it all.

We save it all.

Well, it was great.

Like, how do you, like,

are you listening to it?

Right?

Like, why, why would you say that?

Like,

but what's great is when Alicia walks on

the elevator, Jeff is like, Oh, it's her.

Oh, my God.

That's Alicia Fork.

I have been listening to Alicia Fork for

the last, like, three years.

Oh, my God.

Yeah, exactly.

It's like, oh, my God.

It's like a real-life cameo standing here.

I am, like,

five feet away from Alicia Fork right now.

I can't wait to tell the guys at

work they can't.

Yeah, he's just so starstruck.

It's like, oh my god,

she's right here in front of me.

This is the woman I've been listening to

for the last three years.

I do have to say Alicia's coat game

the past couple of episodes have been

superb.

Yeah, she's got like

A good coat situation here.

Good coat game.

Just kill the game.

Yes, exactly.

Jeff denies that they're listening in on

her.

And he's like, yeah, but like, you know,

hey, everyone.

They just record everything.

And it could come up in a word

search.

And something could pop up.

Everyone.

Just in case you're wondering.

And this was back in the... The...

uh so imagine what has happened since if

you want to stay up all night um

carrie at this point he's just like okay

yeah like give us a day to discuss

strategy and alicia's like but what excuse

me we're gonna have to discuss this in

general and carrie's like no no we're not

he's like no we don't because i've heard

recently that we discuss nothing with any

with each other because we just do stuff

on our own because apparently that's what

we do now alicia

alicia florick that's what we do now we

just make decisions willy-nilly without

each other and now i'm making one okay

i was like oh yeah and then we

hear what we've heard we hear a couple

of times through this episode everyone is

worried about the next snoot yeah everyone

everyone's worried

Alicia goes back to her desk and is

like, hey,

what happened to discussing cases?

Carrie's like, well,

we've had to make some choices while you

were out.

She's like,

we cannot take any cases with the federal

government.

Carrie's like,

we did it in Lockhart Gardner.

And she's like,

we're not as big as Lockhart Gardner.

And Carrie's like,

you don't have to be involved.

and he walks away like he he is

done he is so sassy he's like well

if you don't want to do it then

you don't and just like turns around is

like sashays away like oh sassy carrie has

entered the building i love it love it

love it alicia's phone rings

none other than mr lewis canning and she's

like okay like what can i what can

i help you with and he's like i

need my client back it's like oh which

one chum hum oh interesting um also like

i'm merging with lockhart gardner and so

now we're lockhart gardner canning we kept

will's name isn't that just like that was

so nice nice gesture don't you think and

alicia's just like hangs up the phone

yeah because you know and it's all i

think this is also alicia like realizing

like oh like i definitely dropped the ball

because that was supposed to be my merger

that was supposed to be the thing that

we were doing and because i've been in

this like depressive grief-filled stupor

like i've lost the opportunity now like

diane went ahead without me she did this

other merger and now i'm out and my

greatest one of my greatest enemies has

taken over my greatest lover's position

And I wonder, like,

I understand that there was like a power

vacuum there,

so I guess there was urgency,

but I was like, could Diane have...

just not pushed it as much until,

you know,

like there's errors everywhere on both

sides, but I'm just like,

I don't know why this needed to happen

now,

other than we were in the end of

the season.

Well,

I think this all came about through like

a variety of events, of calamitous events,

right?

if diane and alicia hadn't had that

conversation over dinner that damien

overheard and then dami went to david i

don't think things would have moved this

fast like i think david really yeah yeah

it's david david wants to take control

before control was taken from him he

doesn't want things to be happening that

he's not in control of so he got

this ball rolling because of the whole

like

Damien overhearing Alicia and Diane

discussing it.

And I think if that had never happened,

if it wasn't for stupid old Damien,

this wouldn't have happened, right?

Because I don't think they were in...

Well,

the further goings-on of this episode

suggests that

Lock on Garner were in a little bit

of dire straits here because Will had done

a lot of things without Diane's knowledge

and they were overextended as Carrie told

Diane that they were.

They've now been overextended because of

what Will did.

So I guess they were in a bit

of a dire straits,

but I think

diane could have given the grieving time

for alicia to have it over but david

lee had to stick his nose out nope

nope we're doing this now this is now

what's happening and it's it's happened

super quick or fast i mean other merger

conversations we've had in this show have

lasted weeks and months and like this

happened within a day it seems of like

here's louis canning he's here and it's

now lockhart gardner and canning like

that's what it is now and within a

course of a day it feels like

I do think it was nice that they

kept with me.

Sure, I'm sure.

I don't know.

I wish you could have seen the

conversation.

Was that canning trying to suck up to

Diane?

I think we should keep Will's name.

Or was it Diane demanding they keep Will's

name?

It was probably...

I don't know.

But I think it would be funny if

Lewis Canning was like,

before you say anything, Diane.

I think we should keep Will's name on

it.

And then her going, oh my God,

I can't believe this is my life.

um okay so kalinda kalinda is near will's

office and louis canning has wasted no

time this man is in will's office i

was like is he there he's in oh

yeah he's in will's office he's looking

for a pen underneath the chair and he

asked kalinda to help her base or help

him he's like i just i don't know

i'm getting used to my new surroundings

she goes under the chair and finds the

baseball and the pen

Ouch.

And it's like,

if I didn't know any better,

and I don't,

I wouldn't think this is like Lewis

Canning set this up so that Kalinda would

find this emotional item.

It's like the ultimate in a troll job.

I don't think that that's what happened,

but it was just like...

just feel like some loose canning would do

for some reason that's the thing about his

character right like you never really know

if he's which side what his motivation is

uh he's like hey i need to you

to get everything on both last twenty

cases and kalinda walks over and like here

are the files and he's like no like

i need you to get me your information

on the last twenty cases i'm your boss

now

I'm going to need your help.

And I need everything back to July.

So Kalinda writes it in her little

notebook and walks out the door.

And Canning's like, not so fast.

Do you think you're going to go back

and tell Diane?

Go ahead.

But you're going to need to learn to

trust me real quick.

And then the man has the gall.

To say the words, I'm the new Will.

And Kalinda says, think fast.

Let me throw this ball at you.

And he doesn't catch it.

And she says, you're not the new Will.

And walks out the door.

And never will be.

Goodbye.

Yeah.

Bye.

So Carrie and Clark talk Jeff into being

a whistleblower.

They're like, okay, here's how we can...

And I love when Clark and Carrie team

up.

I feel like it's very buddy-buddy.

It gets a buddy cop film of some

sort.

Yeah.

Okay, so why you'd be a whistleblower?

And Jeff's like, oh, what?

Why?

Well,

you kind of have to say that you

saw something wrong and then you're

protected and they won't care about the

USB file anymore.

It's like, okay, so here's what you do.

And it's very like...

Ocean's Eleven because it's like

instruction and then we see it play out

so like okay go back to work and

the guys are watching like videos of

people running through the streets with

machetes and I just have to say um

Chicago is a very safe place before I

say what I'm going to say but sometimes

on these like little neighborhood watch

like apps

I'll get this alert because my dad's in

the city.

It'll like man with machete running down

the street.

And I'm like, dad, are you,

are you out there again?

Like, what are you doing?

Is your dad running around with a machete

or something?

Or like,

sometimes I'll get a little alert for man

with hatchet.

And I'm like, what's going on with the,

with the business?

Like what's going on here?

oh yeah i mean like listen the amount

of the amount of fireworks or gunshots

that i see on my uh you know

which i'm sure i'm getting ready to see

pretty soon next week because uh next week

is july fourth and yeah that's gonna be

a thing fireworks are country much which

is it gonna be like oh gosh yeah

it's always an exaggeration of like man

with machete on the street this is like

this is like i don't know pocket knife

or a broom sometimes yeah like

So anyway, okay,

so we want you to go back to

work and we want you to answer the

lie detector honestly.

So we see some questions and he is

asked, like,

did you take confidential materials home?

He says, yes.

And there's a pause and an acknowledgement

and a pause.

And then the next instruction is lay the

groundwork for your defense.

So what he does is he tosses chips,

bro code for like casual conversation.

Like, did you see what Freund is doing?

It's like, no, what's he doing?

He's checking on his ex-wife.

And I think that's wrong.

And the guys are like, okay, whatever.

But he said it.

So that was laying the groundwork for the

defense.

And then you need to go to the

general counsel.

And I like how they did this here

because Carrie's instruction voiceover

came out of Zach Woods' mouth.

Yeah.

and I need you to say I'm an

independent contractor with the NSA and I

want to report wrongdoing within the

company which I thought was interesting

was referred to as a company even though

it's like a government entity but anyway

before I go further I must remain

confidential and there must be no

repercussion and so the general counsel's

like by all means take a seat and

like I have seen my boss buying on

his ex-wife and this should cover it just

go back to your desk and relax

so he goes back to his desk he

starts to relax and then he hears another

nsa bro aka michael yuri aka he's

everywhere yeah uh ugly betty shrinking uh

most recently on elspeth uh i think you

didn't mention the time we have seen him

on the good wife before i was like

oh it's right here right a couple weeks

after the elspeth finale uh he's he's all

good wife for us like oh very interesting

so yeah he's here he didn't get really

get much to do in this he's just

kind of like

another paycheck he was there uh and he

does make the discovery of overhearing

carrie on a speakerphone conversation with

clark mentioned the nsa it was like super

far in the background like it wasn't like

they like this wasn't a phone call between

clark and carrie talking about nsa this

was like clark on his speakerphone you

hear carrie way way way in the background

and they're able to like isolate the

background and hear carrie say something

about the nsa so jeff's like um

big gulp, like, uh-oh.

Well, and here's the thing.

When you work in a warehouse,

there's nothing to absorb the sound,

so Carrie really could have been anywhere

at this point.

Yeah, Jeff is a little concerned.

He gets called in by the general counsel's

office, and the general counsel is like,

oh,

what did you want to accuse this man,

your boss, of to his face?

Here, you're accusing him of what?

Which is totally uncool.

Totally uncool.

but very um expected by the government i

would say uh diane and lewis have dinner

and lewis is like i don't want to

be the enemy but this is again i

love post will diane because she just has

zero ups she's like you're not the enemy

you're the devil

Kenning, who has heard this before,

is like, well, you need the devil,

don't you?

You're an angel.

I'm a devil.

You always need the devil.

Diane's like,

that doesn't even make any sense at all.

No one needs a devil.

Not even an angel.

An angel definitely doesn't need a devil.

And Louis was like, hey, you know, like,

we'll cut some corners, you know,

all this stuff.

And Diane's like, what do you want, Louis?

Like, why are we here?

What do you want?

Like, I want your respect.

Like, I want to be an equal partner,

basically, here.

And he's like,

it's not going to work if you're fighting

me.

Diane Lockhart says.

Said the rapist to his prey.

I was like, wow.

And I literally, I gasped.

I was like, oh, man.

Yeah.

Like, Lewis Canning was like,

that's incredibly offensive.

She was like, eh.

Like, basically, like.

Ty's like,

I've had about five of these martinis,

and now I don't give any more Fs

at all.

Like, I'm just, it is what it is,

Lewis.

You try to F me over,

I already know it.

So I don't care what I got to

say to you no more.

I'm beyond caring.

Oh my gosh.

She had the martini.

She had like the three olives and the

martini.

She was like, go, go, go.

She was ordering them throughout this

conversation.

She's like, you want my respect?

Stop playing games.

Use your words to communicate your needs.

And she goes, I want a home.

I've been drifting.

I want a place to call my own.

To which I'm pretty sure her reaction

because she was drunk was just like, okay.

Okay.

Yeah.

All right.

Whatever, bro.

I mean,

Lewis Canning is never to be trusted.

And everyone that's ever dealt with this

man knows this.

And now he's like, he's doing, you know,

it's like the boy that cried wolf, right?

Like you can't keep being this focus.

nice because we've seen this from Lewis

Canning several times like he's like in

the instance where he tried to help Alicia

find grace and then he also used that

opportunity to be self-serving it's like

we can never take you for serious Lewis

because you've done this before you say

all these things like oh I just want

like he's he sounds sincere but we know

so many times he's sounded sincere and

then screwed us over and so it's like

Okay.

Because Diana's like,

I don't know what to do with that.

Because you sound sincere.

You sound like you want to really settle

down.

But I can't trust you.

Can't do it.

I feel like Lewis Canning's character is

the archetype of what people think of.

Some people think of when they think of

lawyers.

Some people think that you can't trust

lawyers.

And I think if you want to show

an archetypal reason why,

it would be Lewis Canning.

yeah the snake oil salesman yes exactly so

alicia goes to this hearing before this

panel for finn the door opens by none

other than our good friend matan

And Matan, Matan, Matan is Mataning.

Matan is Mataning very hard because what

Matan has done is appointed Jimmy Castro

to the panel.

I'm sure at Jimmy's request.

I'm sure.

I'm sure.

But he's playing along.

know what i mean like yeah but matan

is talk about self-serving matan is one of

the most self-serving most like i'm gonna

do what i gotta do to put me

in a position person we've seen on this

show and to be honest like he's never

at least some of those people like lewis

canning actually does his job well matan

just always kind of sucks like yeah yeah

Finn walks in and he's like, hello, Jimmy.

This is weird.

So Alicia walks up and she's like,

here's a summary of all the times that

Finn has worked with Jimmy on each

prosecution.

She's a little out of it.

She's used to working defense cases.

She's not used to working for prosecutors.

So it's like,

she's getting a little tripped up on her

words.

Yes.

Matan's like,

does this cover the detention order?

And I was just like,

I thought we said this wasn't about

Jeffrey Grant.

Like, what are you talking about it?

Matan's like, no, no,

it's about the orders on all of his

cases, all of his cases.

So what does it mean when you,

what does Jen Den mean?

And everyone in the room is like,

we know what that means.

We know it means general detention.

And basically the play by a prosecution

was to send people to general detention to

scare them that that is what their life

would be like

being in jail so that they would take

a plea deal.

So on many of these orders,

you would see gen den,

as in we gen den them,

we sent them to gen den.

Gen den.

Gen pop is more commonly known.

General population is in this,

we're gonna throw you in this group of

just criminals that have been convicted.

Because I mean, once people are arrested,

they're not convicted of any crime.

so it's just like yeah even if you're

innocent we're going to throw you into

this den of iniquity this den of criminals

this den of bad people so that you

we scare you enough to make a plea

deal to possibly avoid jail time like

because you don't want to be here right

like you this isn't where you deserve to

be so you you're going to want to

speak up and say things so we're going

to scare you by putting you in with

all these criminals with all these bad

people yeah

And the argument that the panel is making

is like, hey, Finn,

you put Jeffrey Grant in general

population, which led to him being scared,

which led to him grabbing a gun,

which led to him killing Will Gardner,

right?

Like, that's what you did, Finn.

And Finn walks out of this and he's

like, oh my God, I did.

Like, oh no, I killed Will.

And Alicia walked out of this going,

oh my God, you did.

Alicia, yeah, you did kill Will.

You are supposed to be killing the man

that I love or the man that I

did love and decided I didn't want to

be around anymore,

but then decided when he died that I

probably did love him.

So yeah, you did this.

So yeah, it worked on everybody.

I was like, okay.

I was like, damn.

yeah so she goes back like she's having

the feels she goes back to the office

and she's like hey clark i gotta i

gotta pass this off to you because i

cannot defend this man anymore he has

crossed a line this man killed my man

he killed my lover like three years ago

but that doesn't matter

who I never picked up the phone for,

NSHF walks into the office and he's like,

I've been suspended.

And he tells Carrie and Clark this,

and he's like,

I've been suspended and also don't say NSA

anywhere because it's gonna get picked up

on a speakerphone.

he's like because of reasons he's like you

guys you guys said nsa and i know

that because that i know that because it's

i know it could it you you could

be uh picked up at some point in

time maybe you could be maybe like the

floor is lava like it's definitely like

one of those and kerry's like well okay

so we're gonna we'll sue we will sue

the national security administration for

discrimination for the situation and

alicia walks by first of all she's like

what but then she's like why can't we

say nsa anywhere like why why why are

you listening to us just like i didn't

say i didn't say it was being picked

up i said it could be picked up

but she's like no uh you said it

it was here hold on let me make

a phone call and she called

she calls grace and says let me tell

you who's in the conference room right now

this might have been the best use of

grace florick ever in the series of the

good wife grace is like huh what mom

huh she's like i will tell you right

now who needs a lawyer at jefferson's like

okay okay okay okay okay oh yeah we're

listening to you we're listening to you

yeah it's like uh all right like if

you're not listening i could just freely

say your name on any line here and

it will be picked up right right jeff

right right he's like okay all right all

right all right all right put a phone

out we listen i just love grace like

mom she's like all right grace thanks call

you later she's like talk to you later

just what these four kids think of their

mom like doing these like random

shenanigans like what the hell is going on

with her today

so she's like okay why us like why

are you listening to us and just like

it's not personal like it's not personal

but it is but it is just just

you like it's not personal but it's

because of your client danny marlott and

they're like oh my god he's not like

danny they're like danny marwatt from

walkout gardener three years ago like

that's why you're listening to us like

this is crazy

And then they're like, wait, OK,

so you're listening to Peter.

And he's like, it's a three hop warrant.

And like from anyone in this office.

And he's like, no,

a three hop warrant from you.

Then we get to me,

which was one of the most comical montages

ever.

because clark walks over to someone and is

like use this pen paper like oh what

is this like i mean this was i

don't even know if i remember how to

write anymore like i don't even know if

i know how to write words down i

know i will have to get you a

pen oh yeah

I have a two dollar like... It works.

Probably.

We could be pen pals.

Pen pals.

Then...

we see carrie walk over to someone and

he says in the most serious don't hit

send don't don't do it like i like

working with these two yahoos uh alicia

and carrie like this is probably the third

or fourth time i've had to stop using

my phones i've had to like i can't

like they're always telling me i can't

like what's next you're gonna bring in the

card of burners that we now need to

use like oh my god this is the

third time you've had this happen with

y'all come on get your act together

so funny so which was yeah which was

so funny because in earlier carrie was

like don't worry we got burners he's like

no we know yeah we know we already

that actually didn't work like you thought

it did but it didn't we picked you

up right away like oh my god bro

in the middle of all this eli called

alicia and i was just like oh my

gosh eli i was just on my way

to you i'll be right there i'll be

right over and eli's like huh

Like, don't say anything about anything.

And again,

this is like the second time Eli and

Alicia have had this conversation.

Like, I will come to you.

Don't say anything.

I will go, like, girl,

why do you keep getting tapped by people?

Like, on her way out the door,

Clark stops her by the elevator and is

like, hey,

I wanted to get those files on the

Finn Palmer case.

She's like, no, no,

I'm just saying to stay on the case.

And Clark's like...

whiplash like what she's basically he's

seeing her as this is a very unstable

decision in his mind um and before she

leaves she asks him to ask robin to

get whatever she can from the state's

attorney's office and she's gonna take the

stairs apparently because i guess

someone's listening in the elevator too i

don't know it's like you know uh oh

good to know that robin does still yes

still character on the show

So Alicia runs over to the governor's

office, meets with Eli, and is just like,

you can't use your phones anymore.

Like, don't use your phone at all.

And it's like, what?

And we get the first time that Peter

sees Alicia after the when I cheated on

someone, it did conversation.

tense very tense and frosty yes and she's

like hey so the nsa is listening to

your conversations and they're like since

when like before the election and he was

like oh crap we were talking about the

ballot boxes on the phone uh and alicia's

like okay like if you're gonna talk about

this i gotta go i don't want to

be subpoenaed and peter very quickly

dismisses alicia from the conversation all

right bye bye alicia see ya

And then Peter.

OK,

so I just want to track Alicia's behavior

with with Grace and Peter's behavior that

happens right now because he asked,

who's our newest intern?

And Eli's like, Adam, Adam with the beard.

And it's like, oh, hey,

Adam with the beard,

can I use your phone?

And he picks up the phone and calls

the federal senator and is like, hey,

like,

I'm calling about the NSA tapping thing.

And the guy's like, yeah,

the public doesn't understand why we need

to listen to your conversation.

And he's like, yeah,

I'm pretty much with the people on this

one.

But Peter's like,

I don't like how I've been targeted.

I don't like how my wife's law firm

has been targeted.

And the guy's like, no, no, no.

No, they don't do that.

You're too high up there.

There's just too much up to risk.

He's like, yeah, well,

you check around with me.

And then the conversation ends,

and Eli goes,

is there something I should know about you

and Alicia?

And Peter's like, no.

And then Eli's like,

you're very monosyllabic these days.

Yeah.

It's not, it's not collaborating.

Cause it's like, you know,

Eli has been around these two for quite

a while now and he knows how to

pick up when there's tension.

It was like, uh,

did y'all have another come to Jesus

meeting about, well, like what, what,

what happened?

What's going on?

And people are like, no, we're fine.

Nothing.

Well,

and especially with like the listening,

who knows?

So now we're at a deposition for Jeff

at the NSA and,

We learned that Jeff did not have a

negative work evaluation before this week,

and Kerry asked if that came before or

after the claim against Troins.

His supervisor, general counsel then says,

so conveniently that answering that

question would be against the state

secrets act and basically any question

that carrie asks is against the state

secrets act so the guy the moderator

george guy like uh we need to find

a more fruitful path then clark clark gets

his little detective hat on is like hold

on i want to try something

Okay, so if we can't get anywhere here,

we're going to file a discrimination case

in federal court because Jeff is part

Cherokee.

And they're like,

you're going to lose that.

And he's like, I don't care.

It becomes part of the record,

the public record.

You know, the record for the public.

That anyone can look up to know what

this was about.

Yes.

Is that what you want, NSA folks?

Yes.

Yes.

Lewis Canning calls Alicia again and he

does what he does he's like hey I'll

assume your debt if you he's like a

debt collector not in the bad way but

like in the like he collects debt like

that's what he does I'm a debt collector

it's like

You know,

I totally forgot about this six million

dollars, I guess, that Alicia was like,

oh, nice callback to like last season.

I totally forgot about that.

Alicia's on the hook for this six million

dollar libel lawsuit.

And he's like, hey, well,

we'll take care of some of that.

You know,

all you got to do is kick some

of your homework.

yeah it's like well and chum home has

needs the resources of a national firm

like lg and c and alicia is like

again very like this is where there are

moments where alicia and peter are like

oil and water and then there are moments

where they are the exact same person

because alicia is using the fact that

she's on the phone with louis canning to

ask him questions like what do you think

of al-qaeda canning's like al-qaeda

Oh, sure.

I don't like them.

What do you think about the NSA?

He's like, I'm mainly libertarian.

He's answering earnestly these questions

out of nowhere.

And meanwhile,

the team at the NSA is like,

I'm getting five hits on this one phone

call.

And I love that this is just basically

a troll to Lewis Canning,

just to be like, you know what?

I freaking hate you, Lewis Canning.

I'm going to get you on the NSA's

radar.

How about that?

I'm going to make the NSA aware of

you, just because I hate you so much.

I'm going to use this wiretapping thing to

my personal advantage.

Yes.

And so Peter gets back on the phone

with the senator,

and this is where mob boss Peter comes

out, because he's like, oh, hey, okay,

we're in clear?

So good, so good.

So, senator,

what about this Westgate construction

site?

We agreed to delay compensation.

Like, he's...

The senator's like,

I don't think we need to talk about

it.

He's like, yeah, I think we do.

It's like, oh,

I thought it was just between me and

you.

And he's like, well,

it is between me and you.

On the phone.

Because I'm not being listened to, right,

senator?

So it's just me and you right now

on this line.

And was this supposed to be like a,

yeah,

we've got to talk about the kickbacks of

beginning from this construction site

revolt.

Yes.

And he's like, okay.

Peter goes, okay, well...

I'm going to call Alicia's law firm twice

a week for the next five weeks.

And we're going to discuss this Westgate

construction site.

So if you if you want that to

stop,

you'll you'll get the NSA to stop again.

Very mob boss, very shakedown.

You'll get it.

And the senator caves against this guy,

this guy in Illinois.

But get me your his contact info.

I'll deal with them.

And Eli, basically, it was like

Eli's political I'm just gonna say it

boner he was like he was like so

like oh my god Peter you're so amazing

and bows down to him yeah

jeff's home apparently was raided by the

doj they say they recovered a classified

document of course they did because they

classified it after they got it um and

so now the hurdle here is they're gonna

have to get clearance in order to see

what this is just another delay by the

government so that's how that's that's how

that ends up lewis calls kalinda into his

office he's like hey um so are you

happy here like you never you never signed

a contract

she says if i wasn't happy i wouldn't

be here and louis canning louis canning

says oh that's such a coincidence because

if i weren't happy you wouldn't be here

you know it's it's interesting because we

kind of see this new dynamic that clinda

has never really had to deal with of

like she's always had will and diane she's

had these like relationships with them and

they've never really had to kind of

put her to task or put her under

their thumb.

And now she's got a boss.

Like this is the first time that she's

had like a boss boss of like

Yeah,

and I don't have a connection to you.

I don't have this years-long relationship

with you.

If I don't like what you're doing,

I will just fire you because I am

in my rights to do that, Kalinda.

So you can't bat your eyes at me

or make some little small talk gesture

that I'm going to fall for because I

don't know you.

I don't care about you.

Yes, you do great work, but so?

Well, and most importantly,

he also sees –

Kalinda as a pathway to power for Diane.

So he wants to cut off anything that

Diane, any advantage that Diane has.

So not only is this a real boss

type of situation,

but this is also a power play situation.

And he's kind of right.

He's kind of right as well.

It's like, yes, Lewis Canning sucks,

but he's a hundred percent right.

Like Kalinda is Diane's

person.

More so than before because now Diana and

Kalinda have this even bigger a bond

because they've gone through this whole

thing together.

And it's like her bond with Will before

this.

Her and Will had all this history,

all this stuff before,

but now Will's death is the thing that

bonds Kalinda to Diane.

And that is a lot.

You can't...

Bryce Gorman, separate from that,

so they are they are bonded here and

Lewis kind of puts it to colinda like

you can't you can't work for diane and

the firm at the same time,

you can't be diane's personal

investigator,

because it works against the best interest

of everyone if you're just dance person.

Yeah.

And he also lets Kalinda know, like,

Diana doesn't have the votes.

I have the votes.

So he, again, asks,

Lewis Canning gets asked this question a

lot in this episode.

What do you want?

Like, what do you want out of this?

And he says,

I want to know what Diana wants you

to do.

And Kalinda says,

to know what you're up to.

And so,

and whether you're pushing her out.

And he says,

tell her I'm not pushing her out.

Which means he's pushing her out.

But

yeah i mean we'll see what kalinda does

with that yeah and we can't trust the

word he says so all this means really

nothing to anyone because it's like i

don't know bro i don't know where to

believe you're not

Alicia arrives at the hearing for Finn

again.

This time, she's a whole new person.

She's got a good night's sleep.

I don't know why we needed to know

that, but she did.

Because I was like,

does that attract anything?

I don't know.

She's in a good mood because she's back

in the swing of things with this NSA

thing,

and she's figured out a way out of

this or whatever.

Also, maybe because

I don't know,

but she's seemingly done all of her

homework for this investigation thing.

Yeah, she's prepared for this.

So she goes in and she questions Jimmy

Castro.

Have you ever used Jen Den in any

memos?

And he says, no,

that's not part of the culture of my

office.

and oh okay great i'm glad we established

that let's take a look at these text

messages that you sent finn what does gd

stand for and jimmy castro thinks that

we're gonna believe that it means go down

in the charge like to demote the charge

and so

holy she's like okay so here it means

go down on bastille like you want to

go to and he's like on the charges

how by going down on him it was

so funny

and basically she uses this very silly but

also very like accurate point to be like

you're being hypocritical everyone uses

this everyone uses this tactic you're

using it here everyone's using it you all

know what this means finn was just acting

in accordance to the office and he would

he did whatever you guys would do and

you know this like this is you know

what you're doing here

yeah yeah go ahead and i'm just trying

to like i'm trying to backtrack of where

like alicia got this like no clue burst

new burst of like okay because she got

this idea from the nsa right because we

had this whole nsa conversation yes she

tells clark to get robin to pull all

like correspondence from finn to uh

whoever it's like she got the idea from

this so just like

It's like the Elizabeth Eureka moment of

like,

when did you come into this moment of

like, okay, I can do this now.

I can figure this out.

And I guess through this like kind of

realization that Finn didn't do anything

to put Will's life in danger.

Like this could have been anyone.

So she should not put this on Finn.

Yes.

Yes, I think there's that.

But I don't know how that's tied to

the NSA of it all,

because there was the switch when she

found out that the NSA was listening to

her conversations.

There was a definite like switch in her

motivations because and I wonder if it was

to protect the firm,

to protect what she's done,

like kind of snapping her back into

reality of like, oh, crap.

Like if I like you had you had

mentioned so astutely at the beginning of

like she took her eye off the ball

in the merger.

Like I,

she doesn't want to lose any more ground

here.

And so I wonder if she,

if that just got her to wake back

up.

It's just like figuring something out.

Like she figured out the NSA thing by

like using her senses, using her skills,

like hearing, hearing just what?

That reminds me of that one time when

Will told Kalinda, you know,

that one time, like, you know,

that feeling when you figure something

out, there's nothing like it.

Oh, hey.

So, yeah,

maybe that's what kicked this off for

Alicia to be like,

I'm still good at this.

I can still do this.

And, like, maybe also her being like, yes,

pull the correspondence.

Hey, the NSA is listening in on us.

Let's see what other communications are

happening by other people.

We can listen in on other people's

conversations, too.

And so maybe through this research she

did, she realized...

hey they all yeah she applied the hop

theory right exactly so like everyone does

this this wasn't finn's thing and also i

think this might also be without saying it

overtly like i'm also taking you all to

task the whole state attorney's office for

oh for applying this this uh this um

What am I trying to say?

Practice?

Yeah,

this tactic of softening up people does

this to people like Jeffrey Grant that

made him do this.

So I'm taking you all task force.

Almost.

Almost.

I would say almost.

Like...

The system was set up to benefit certain

people.

Almost, Jason.

I don't know if you've heard this before.

I don't know.

Have you heard this before?

I don't know.

We could be at groundbreaking news.

I don't know.

But she does say at the end of

the, I think you're right,

because she's like, well, you woke up.

And she's like, yeah,

it's time to kick some ass.

like she is she is looking at all

of them yeah it's like shame on all

of you like i'm not blaming finn for

this because i mean when when they said

this in the the scene before it almost

was like yeah finn did this finn killed

my man i can't i can't defend him

anymore and it also makes like um

Like this is going to sound very

absolutist.

It's almost like it was it was fate

that this happened,

but it's not like it wasn't.

It's like the system was set up so

that these conditions were right so that

this thing could happen.

You know what I mean?

And that like takes away some of the

personal blame, shame,

guilt that she may have been feeling

because first she blamed herself that she

didn't answer the phone.

Then she blamed herself that she didn't

take the Jeffrey Grant case.

Now I think she's looking at it saying,

like,

what if I was Jeffrey Grant's attorney?

The outcome could have been the same for

me because the system is the way the

system is.

I couldn't change anything about what

happened.

And it's like, and yeah,

I think she relishes now in taking

everyone to task.

I'm like, you all did this.

This tactic you used is what brought

Jeffrey Grant to this place.

And shame on all of you for this.

And a lot of us are like,

and you know this, Matan.

She called that man out by name.

You know this, Matan.

But notice, Geneva was not in the room.

Geneva was not there.

You will not be putting this on Geneva

Pines.

Geneva Pines is the only person that does

not do this.

I don't know that for a fact,

but I know it for a fact.

Geneva Pines does not employ this

strategy.

How dare you try to sell the Geneva

Pines a good name.

She does anything for her sister.

That's right.

Angelica?

Yes.

So yeah, it'll be interesting.

I don't know if she's going to become

the white woman social justice warrior

that I need in my life.

I think she probably got this out of

her system now.

She's like...

I was able to call you out for

the practice that led to the death of

my one true love.

I'm good now.

Yeah.

But if it inspires you to take on

a cause, people in the world,

I'm all for it.

Sure.

Okay,

so Diane and Kalinda go and confront Lewis

Canning or talk to Lewis Canning.

They're like, hey,

so this is very weird because I think

they're coming to him

genuinely and also hesitantly and also

with an alternative agenda but i don't

know what it is yet and i think

i think in terms of the episode this

felt out of nowhere yes it did exactly

which makes me think like what did they

talk about like what is their what is

their play here realization or

conversation because they they are coming

to him right now like hat in hand

like it

before they started talking i was like oh

this is gonna be a big showdown like

come to jesus meeting of like you're not

gonna f with us but then it turns

into like we want to thank you so

much i'm like

Which is a ploy that Lewis Canning would

do on someone else.

You know what I'm saying?

So this is why I'm like,

they're thanking him because apparently

Will did purchase some firms that left the

Lockhart Gardner vulnerable.

And Lewis Canning's like, well, yeah,

but that was quite a surprise, you know?

And he ended up selling or getting rid

of two of the sales because Lewis Canning

represents the largest pharmaceutical

company in the country.

These other two firms,

they represented like the second and

third.

So it was a conflict of interest.

So they kind of rescinded the sale.

But he kept the sports firm,

which was like, you know, farewell.

And they're like, oh, thank you.

Thank you so much.

And

Liz Canning's like,

you think there's a hidden agenda here?

I don't think so.

You're going to have to let that go.

Diane's like, well,

your track record is kind of hard to

ignore here.

He's like, that was before.

That was in the olden times.

I'm Baby Ava's scumbag, but hey,

I'm your scumbag.

That was the opening I should use for

this show.

You're not a scumbag.

But I feel like we heard that.

I feel like Will said that to Diane

at some point or it's been said before.

I don't know.

But there's a look between Diane and

Kalinda of like, huh?

Do I believe this?

Do I not believe this?

I don't know.

What's going on?

Sounds genuine,

but we just can't believe it.

Yeah.

So we don't know.

So

next thing we see is adam with the

beard because this was made very clear to

us that this intern had a beard so

that we would see adam with a beard

go into the mosques and post yes jason

yes that was not adam with the beard

that was adam that was overseas so that

wasn't in chicago

No, I thought it was in Chicago.

No, that was like in a mosque overseas.

But it did look like Adam with the

beard.

Yes,

I think it was Adam with the beard

because this is my theory.

Peter had Adam with the beard go put

into mosques.

I don't think it was overseas.

I think it was here.

I think it was.

Have you ever been to a mosque?

No, I haven't.

They look like that.

But like, so you go to like,

he went to the mosques and he put

up posters for a car for sale and

put Charles Troins' numbers.

Because remember the last time that Peter

asked, he's like,

just give me the contact information.

I'll take care of it.

I think what Peter did was frame this

whole thing so that Freund would get these

phone calls by having Adam go put the

posters up in mosques around the city.

Go back and look at the scene again.

I think we're both gonna.

I don't think it was Adam.

I don't think it was Adam.

I don't think Peter or something.

Why else would they say Adam with the

beard?

Why would they say that?

I don't know.

I don't think so.

Sound off, good folks.

Was this Adam being turned?

I don't think it was Adam.

I think it was Adam.

Because otherwise,

why is Peter taking credit for this at

the end?

Okay,

so he goes and he puts up these.

Adam with the beard or his doppelganger

goes and puts up these posters for a

car for sale with Charles Freund's number

on it.

Charles gets all these phone calls.

He's like,

I don't know why I'm getting these phone

calls.

There's no car for sale,

which then gets picked up by the NSA,

which puts Charles Freunds through the lie

detector test.

He ends up being put on admin leave.

And he's like, this is all a prank.

I'm just getting phone calls.

And the general counsel's like,

which phone call are you talking about?

Let's go through these.

Let's talk about what we know.

And it turns out that Charles Freunds is

going to be out of the picture for

a while because of the situation.

And the government ends up dropping

the whole entire floric warrant because of

this and um they the team finds out

because that's why i thought carrie did it

that's why i thought carrie did it because

like he has this like smoke on his

face like hey jeff it worked the case

case got dropped man

Maybe they worked in cahoots.

But I'm pretty sure this was a Peter

Florek situation.

Because this is how a mob boss would

work.

This is what would happen.

So anyway, they call Jeff.

Jeff doesn't answer.

And the team is like,

he's not coming back.

He went to Iceland.

All hot women are from Iceland.

Bjork is from Iceland.

I just enjoyed the Bjork reference as an

oldie.

But then the general counselor guy

basically says, hey,

we're putting you guys on a new case.

This is not the last time we will

see...

yeah i was trying to say guys but

i was trying to think like was this

the last time but i feel like we're

going to see them at least once or

twice more before the series ends i don't

know if we'll see them in this series

but we definitely see them in the good

fight okay okay that's what i'm thinking

of um yeah that makes sense um because

i was like i don't i feel like

this isn't the last time we see these

people but i yeah so that makes a

lot of sense there

but this is the end of it is

the end of a running gag like yeah

you know we checked it we this is

almost like the you know the the colin

sweeney's or the uh the uh my homes

like we're gonna check out these people at

least once a season um yeah it feels

like we might not anymore until maybe the

good fight well i don't know louis canning

might get a hit because of all of

this chat about al qaeda

Alicia does go visit Peter at the end

of the day thanks him for helping with

the NSA case she has no clue I

really do think

I don't know.

Anyway,

she thinks that Peter made a phone call.

Well, Peter did make a phone call.

He made the senator guy take them off

the list.

But that's not what ended the thing.

What ended the thing was the car

situation.

I don't think that's what ended it.

I think that was merely just to get

Freud's in trouble.

I think that was just like a retribution

thing.

For all we know,

Jeff could have just done it himself and

gotten Freud's in trouble.

I think Peter's call to the senator is

what ended the NSA thing in total.

uh the freud's thing i think is just

an extra cherry on top of like f

that guy we're gonna effort them i think

what actually ended it was peter's phone

calls at center like yo i'm gonna call

my wife's firm and talk about you so

my theory is that carrie was responsible

for the posters

i'm not sure who's responsible it could

either be carrie it could just be jeff

himself uh like doing that or it could

have been any number of things um i

just don't think it was peter i think

it was either carrie because carrie was so

smug in that final phone call like haha

we did we got frauds in trouble and

it's like you know so i don't i

don't know but i think i think peter

is the one that got the tap ended

because he threatened that senator guy

like i'm gonna yeah okay fine okay fine

Anyway, then they have a very civil,

very professional calendar meeting.

And however, though, the door is open.

So I don't know who overhears,

but there's not much to overhear.

I don't know.

But I guess it's like,

don't worry about the NSA,

because if you leave your doors open,

people are going to overhear you.

I think it's kind of like,

this is the new normal.

We're just going to sit down and talk

about schedules,

and we're not going to really...

talk about anything else we're just gonna

kind of live this new life of just

being cool i'm fine with it talking

schedules we're not gonna yell we're not

gonna fight we're just gonna move on with

this new new way of life we're just

gonna be yeah but i think peter knows

not to not to pick that scab anymore

well we'll have to see if if there

is a continued change in behavior

no we discarded the stars there's no more

stars the stars i think you know he

will get an acknowledgement of behavior

change from me yeah i think i i

don't know if this would really count for

anything because he mostly acted in his

best self-interest no no no i'm seeing

like the continue if there's a continued

yeah if he does if he does anything

good

Yeah,

like he or he at least didn't push

and ask about the family or how she

was doing or anything like that.

Like the bar is so low.

Just berate her for caring about a

friend's death.

Yes, yes, yes.

Your friend.

Your friend.

Friend.

Anyway, so yeah,

that's where we ended it in episode

eighteen.

Yeah.

All tapped out.

All tapped out.

Marissa,

do you want to tell the good folks

where they can find you and what you're

up to?

Oh, my gosh.

Well,

I am recovering from today's podcast.

And you can find me at itsmemarissaG.com

where I have links to all the things

that I'm up to.

Those change from time to time.

And who knows?

But you can find links to this podcast,

to our YouTube.

We've got playlists for both The Good Wife

and Elspeth.

And also will be populating in the future,

not the near future, but the future,

the Gilded Age.

So if you want to get caught up

on the Gilded Age,

it's a good time to do so before

the fall and everything drops for the new

season.

You'll find all of that there.

I'm also people, places, and things.

I don't know.

Who knows?

Just go there.

Find out what's up.

Jason, what's going on with you?

Yeah,

special shout out to our new friend Dennis

O'Hare, aka Judge Abernathy,

for the cameo.

And making my day.

Jason, thank you so much.

Of course, of course.

But you can find me talking about mess

at all times.

Over on the Perfect Match Podcast,

we are on Patreon for the time being,

but pretty soon we're going to be back

on our regular Rob Has a Podcast,

Love at First Sight podcast.

feed nonsense.

Talk about the show Married at First

Sight.

It's coming.

New season's coming July twelve.

Season twenty.

So we'll be talking about that over and

around past podcasts.

But of course we do have a rewatch

project going on over on our Patreon.

So if you go to the A Perfect

Match Patreon,

that's where you can find us talking about

season twelve of Married at First Sight.

That's where you can find me.

That's where you can find Marissa G.

And until next time, stay good.
