# The Good Wife S05E02
[00:00:00]
Welcome to the Good Pod, where today we're talking The Good Wife, season five, episode two, the Bitbucket. I'm ready for host Jason Reed With me as always. I think we might all Marissa. Marissa Garza. Marissa. You good? I'm good. Jason. You good? I'm, I'm, I'm good. But I think like, I think someone might be listening to this.
Oh no. I want them to listen to it. Like, you know, we even, even, you know, we've had a lot of conversations about the Good Wife. Yeah. Just, just you and me. You know, we just get on here, chat about the Good Wife, and then broadcast this to the world. I really hope someone actually is listening to it. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
You've been broadcasting this to the world? Yeah. Broadcasting it. Yeah. 'cause you told me to Marissa because Jason Reed told me to. You've been leaking our conversations about the Good wife. That's how it works. Oh, I had no idea. Yeah. What do you think a podcast is, Jason? [00:01:00] I thought it was a conversation between friends.
That's all I thought. A podcast, just a pot of people. Yeah, just I just, that's what I thought, but now you're telling me everyone can hear this. Yeah. I would've changed a lot of things if I knew that. Well, let's see. Now that, you know, let's see if anything changes. And let's, let's, let's see. Let's see if I behaved better.
Spoiler. I won't. Um, uh, before we get into the nooks and crannies and all the goodies of this episode, let's remind you some free and easy ways you can help this podcast. Oh, that's why you have me say this all the time, Marissa. Okay. I get it. Yeah. That, yeah. What do you think I was seeing? Yeah, who are you talking to?
Yeah, I, I, you know, I, I never really qu I, I like talking to you so much. I never questioned Oh, like why? We have a pre, why I have a pre pre-roll script. Why any of this up? But I'm, I'm understanding. Okay. I get it. Um, don't forget to review rate and subscribe to this podcast wherever it's, you are listening and or watching.
It was just me. I'm understanding. I just thought it was me like [00:02:00] reviewing the podcast under different names. I'm understanding so much now. You can also email us if you, if you would like to at the good pod feedback@gmail.com. I thought all those emails were just from you, Issa. Oh my God. Oh my goodness.
Thank you. You know, thinking I was that creative. Gosh. Think Jason think, oh my God, earth to Jason. Um, if you also wanna help us out monetarily, which I thought was just a loan from Marissa to me, uh, you can also go to buy me a coffee do com slash good pie to donate any money, amount of money you wish to help this small fledgling podcast.
Stay on. Its. Well, and I should, I should preface this, Jason, let you know, like, just by, by saying if you didn't listen to the Elsbeth, uh, coverage, this speak, you might not know that Jason is currently recovering from some surgery. He's okay. Mm-hmm. Everything's fine. Um, but he has had an exorbitant amount of rest in recent times, so it's okay.
Like if you, like, if you're just coming to this realization now, like [00:03:00] it's okay. Like, I get it. See what the power of sleep and rest can do for you. Like, look at that, look at that. Just really getting a lot of clarity, you know? Yeah. In my mind, rethinking things. Uh, yeah. Like M Mesa said, I, I was recently in the hospital for a few days getting the old gallbladder taken out, um, which was way more complicated than it should have been.
Uh, they told me I was gonna be in the hospital for max two days, ended up being there for four days. So that was not fun, but I'm back better than ever, baby. Uh, minus one gallbladder. Let's go. Who needs a gallbladder? Just me who eats a lot of high fat and greasy foods. It's a new Jason, everyone. New Jason.
It's a new life for me. It's a new life for me now. I'm gonna have to watch like what I'm eating and I do not like that at all. Uh, but I'll get through it. I'll get by. Well, we're so glad you made it. We're so glad you're here. Um, and we're so glad everyone's here on this publicly broadcast conversation about the good wave.
Excuse. If you would, if you would just like [00:04:00] introduce that every way in the before this, I would know, I would've understood, but you know, you really, you really kind of tricked me into thinking this is just like a mean and you convo. I was just like, man, Marissa really likes to keep a schedule of like, when we talk about the good life of week.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, should we get into it? Jason? Shall we talk about it? Shall we talk about? Let's do, let's do it. Episode two, season five, episode two. Um, we get a previously on, at the start of this one. We are always gonna get a good one when we gotta remind us of, of some stuff. Like, okay, we got, and like we need, we need some background.
We go like. Really short snippets of things and kind of really far back. So we get Neil Gross from Chum hum introducing himself. Mm-hmm. That's it. So we know we're gonna have some chum sub chum hum stuff. We, we get some stuff about the Supreme Court seat. Um, so we know that's gonna be in there. Uh, we get the conversation in the parking lot about the.
The new kids leaving the fourth years leaving. And then we also go all the way back to, I forget what season, but the episode, I think it was two [00:05:00] maybe. Yeah. Wow. Time ago. Yeah. 'cause it a, like they mentioned that it was two years ago, so that would make sense around season two, um, where we had an informant, um, targeted by the government because he was helping people in bada cul.
Remember that doula, cul, I didn't think I ever need to hear the words. Me, doula, kulp ever again. But here we are. Medula. Kulp. Here we are. So that is what is on the docket as they say for this episode. Um, I kind of broke it down by case of the week, a new firm stuff first. So let's get into that. Um, we do hear David call Diane and Will say, Hey, like the fourth years, they're not using their phones anymore.
Like. They're not using their phones. And Will and Diana are like, that's great. Like we don't have to worry about it anymore. But David is like, no, you idiots. They have been warned like, aren't you like seeing what's going on here? And they're like, yeah, whatever Diana, Diana will, y'all need to get your head outta your asses because like all the, [00:06:00] all the information is there.
You just have not seen it. David Lee. David Lee is the only smart one amongst y'all. He knows the uprising is coming. He's trying to warn you. You guys are just like, ah. But it just makes it all the better for when the truth eventually comes out of like, yes, hey Dummies, we're doing it right in front of your face the whole time and you just stand.
Yes, so much so that Alicia isn't at work right now. She is touring the new building that they got for $24 or $25 a square foot. With Carrie, it's so big that she can't even see Carrie. She doesn't know where Carrie's is when she arrives. So he has to come meet her and she's like, Hey, what do you think?
It's like, oh, it looks like a real law firm. It's like, great, let me show your office. Which I thought was funny because she points or he points her to a closet, which is a definite carry joke. She's like very funny. And all the other fourth years are there and they're passing out burner phones. So now they're really, they're really taking this seriously.
They're like, only [00:07:00] use Lockhart Gardner phones for Lockhart Garden business. In the middle of all this will calls of course. And I feel like Carrie is kind of like the dad of this group. 'cause like, wait, wait, wait, wait. Carrie Care or New Carrie Care. Kerry Care, not Kerry, but E Yeah. Not new Carrie. Not new care.
Just Carrie Care. Carrie Care. New. New Kerry's, like new Coke. Like Right. They, they said it's gonna be better than Coke, but I don't think it's better of Coke. No, no. But he is like. Shh. Everyone wills on the phone. Like, he's very like, like, stop all your conspiring. They're gonna hear the conspiring over the phone.
Like, these people, these fourth years have no chill at all. It's just like, y'all relax, like you are, you are doing too much. Yes, yes. But will calls because hum, there's a chum home meeting back at the firm [00:08:00] and they wanna put Alicia in it. And this is the meeting that would be handled by Carrie. And so Alicia's kind of concerned.
She's like, but why aren't, aren't they happy with Carrie? And Will says like, Neil's concerned about Carrie's like dedication to. The team. Um, and this kind of puts like a little bug in Alicia's ear. Like, she's like, what? Like there's some doubt here. Like this is weird. Well, 'cause Carrie is telling Alicia like, oh, I gotchu hum in the bag, baby.
Yeah. He love me. He love my ass. And now Will's telling Alicia like, he don't love his ass. Like, he's like, he's worried about him. So maybe she's like, okay. Like, uh, 'cause home is supposed to be coming with us to the new firm. Like they're probably going to be our biggest client. And so it's us. Like without them we don't exist.
We're nothing. We're nothing. So it's just like, I love how Alicia like handles this as she got off the phone with Will, she's like. Um, everything good with Neil Gross? Like, like, y'all good. Carrie's like, yeah, I'm we're great. He loved me. She's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
Carrie's like, why? She's like nothing, [00:09:00] nothing, nothing. I don't know why she doesn't just tell him right now. Like, this is not a good way to start a partnership. You gotta be real. Well, yeah, exactly. And she also says like, the, well, this is the reason that Will gave too, is just like, they want a partner in the conversation.
'cause Gary's like, why do you need to be there? Basically? Yeah. Like, oh, they need a partner. I already told Carrie, I was like, listen, you better get your, you, you better get your Ps and Qs up with me girls. 'cause he don't like you right now. Yeah. I what you did, you don't like you. Yeah. Yeah. It's just like it.
And also shows us like, I don't think how, like, how in is Alicia? Right? Like if, I think if she was really in, she would have that conversation with Carrie. Mm-hmm. But if she, she's not, she's not giving, she's only giving 50% of the information. And the Humum thing makes so much sense why Humum is going with Carrie and Alicia.
'cause like we, we know Neil Gross Hates, hates Will Gardner. So I think with the opportunity presented of like, okay, you know, the people that do the most work on your law cases, they're coming to this other firm, you wanna come along? He's like, they hell yeah. Let [00:10:00] get the hell away from Will Gardner. I'll stick with, uh, Alicia and Care who I know are the real backbone of Lock Har and Gardner.
So I think this is a, a really good win for, for Neil Grossberg. Yeah. Let me get away from Will Gardner. Let me go with the real people of Lockhart Gardner or so he thinks at the moment. Oh, he thinks, yeah. Uh, but Neil wants the meeting that Neil wants to have. The reason why everyone's pulled together is because he wants to tell the world that he has not complied with NSA subpoenas.
Okay. So let's like also remember like when this is, this is when like a lot of phones are being tapped. There's a lot of conversations around. You know, this is really when the, like the talk of privacy really came to light to the, the light of the general public, I would say. Mm-hmm. Um, and so Neil wants to tell people like, chum Home's not participating in these, but he can't do so because he has, is bound by a gag order.
And so he doesn't know what to do with this. And he basically brings [00:11:00] this problem to the firm to solve. And especially, it's especially pressing because the press is saying that they were contacted, like Chum Home was contacted by the NSA and he can't even say, no, we weren't, because this gag order is so strict.
So he's like, what do we do? And carrie's like, well first of all, it's so good you came to us. And he's like, yeah, yeah, okay, I'm a good boy. But what else? Um, Alicia's like, okay, well we have to sue them. We're like, great. Okay. Like on what? And then we get new Carrie basically putting the idea forward that we sue them for.
Prior restraint, which is the idea of restraining something or restricting something prior to publication. That's not at least how it used to be. It's not, I mean, if you want to look at the network in which you're watching the show on, it's not how it used to be. Yeah. Um, and this is an idea that like [00:12:00] everyone is okay with and cares.
Like I think we can get others on board like Google and Yahoo and all, um, and even sleuth way, our good friend Peter, Peter Ed or Patrick Edelstein Patrick, um, and then. Everyone's like, okay, break. And Carrie makes a phone call to Kalinda and let her know, because he's in the same room as Alicia, so he can only make a phone call.
He can't call her over. He can't be like, oh, hey, Kalinda, he has to call her because she cannot be in the same room as Alicia. Yes. Yeah. That comes up a couple times in this episode. Uh, meanwhile, David is meeting with Veronica, um, Alicia's mom and talking about her money, and there's like. There's, I don't know.
What, what do you think the vibes are between these two? Oh, they're vibes, baby. There's like, there's some sexual chemistry, at least going one way. There's sexual chemistry going from David to Veronica. I'm not exactly sure if Veronica's a return to favor, but you can tell, uh, David wants some of Alicia's Mommy, let's just say that.
Um, yeah. I dunno about you guys. Every time Veronica possible scream like, [00:13:00] yay. Veronica's here. She's definitely, she's definitely a great character. I love to see every time they don't overuse her. Like, I feel like they started overusing Jackie at a, at, at, at a moment. But now, like every time she's like, okay, yeah, Veronica's here.
We're gonna get something cool and kooky and fun. Um, so yeah, they're, they're talking about her money and what she's gonna do with it. Yeah. Because of the divorce. And, and everything. Um, so she's, she has $1.2 million. David's like, I really just like suggest bonds, which is like a really safe way to invest money, like long term everything.
And there's this like banter back and forth between them. He's like, you know who, what, who you are? You're a carnivore. And he's like, well, out in the jungle, baby, the cat survives or something. I'm, I'm, I'm so surprised he didn't mean he didn't add a rah on the end of that, I was like, you know, I'm a, you know, I'm a jungle cat, baby rah.
And Alicia walks in. It's just like, um, I know, I know. I, I know, I know. You're not macular my mama right now. David. You not, you not even macking on my mama right now. He's like, oh, my bad, my bad. [00:14:00] Here come the daughter. And I have to say, um, I know it's hard to have two phones. I've had two phones from work, two phones in, two phones, my life before.
Um, but Alicia does a very, very bad job. She's literally holding one phone in one hand, another phone in the other. And David, he is like looking at her while her other phone rings and she answers it and walks back to her office. She does ask Veronica to Veronica to visit her later. But this, this was the big takeaway for me is like, David saw this blunder.
This is what I'm talking about. No, chill. Y'all gotta be way more like conspicuous than this. Like, 'cause she's like, she's like, oh yeah, Uhhuh. Yep. She's like, uh, both her phones like in David's face, like, Hey, hey David, I wonder what this is about. Maybe you should think about this. Um, and so now, now I, I, I personally have worked, have been having two phones for the last like.
I don't know, 12 ish years for work. I got a work phone, got my normal phone. It was definitely a hassle and a half to, uh, to deal with while you're at [00:15:00] work. Like what's ringing right now? My phone, the, the work phone you pick up your, your work phone. They, it's your personal phone, all this other stuff. Um, but yeah, so that, that definitely is like, Hmm.
David, who, the only person in this law firm apparently that has a brain cell is this, like, that really like piques his interest. So like, what's going on there? It's so interesting because it, um, his skills great. Like his deduction. Great. His motivation, I hate him. You know what I mean? Like, it's just like, if only you use your mind for good David, and not even Yeah.
David. Like, come on, come on. Uh, it turns out on the phone is Carrie who's like, Hey look, Alicia. I know I just walked you through this bu beautiful building. Um, but we're not gonna get the office space because they wanted to talk to our current employers and we can't have that happen because our current employers are Will and Diane, uh, they know jumping ship.
Yeah. So, um, we're gonna need to find $140,000. And Alicia is mad. Alicia's like, where am I getting get [00:16:00] $140,000 from? I'm like, oh no. And at this whole time Veronica has gone into the office. Mm-hmm. Like, she's met Alicia in her office, she's doing her mom redesigning or whatever, and she is hearing Alicia's side, I'm assuming of this conversation.
Yeah. And she gets enough, she gets enough to act later, but you know, Alicia's like, I don't know where I'm gonna get this 140,000 bucks from care. How dare you asking for more money when I put up most of the money to begin with, for our, for the office space, for the down payment. And it's like, I, like, I, I feel you could, like, I know she doesn't want to.
Well, you, you could definitely ask Peter for the money because I feel like, I feel like Peter got like that, especially since he just, he like, he just paid Christian $25,000 for nothing. Literally. I think he could, I think he fucked you for sure. Well, and he was all like super supportive. So this ask would be like, well prove it.
Right, exactly. Because she just asked him for money when, um, when she was being made partner and she needed like an obscene amount of money. She did go to Peter in that instance. I feel like she [00:17:00] could probably do it again. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. He is like, uh, girl, yeah, you pay me back for making you a partner.
I don't know what you, now you asked me for more money. I don't think he would do that, but he's just like, I mean, he's the governor now. I think he, I think he might have it. He's not the governor yet. He's the governor. Oh yeah. Governor elect. I'm so sorry, but I think he probably got it. He's, if he's on handing out $25,000 checks to, uh, to immigrants to make them go away, I, which Jesus, which is wild given, uh, the current state of affairs.
Um, they are, they did, but that was the thing that happened. They were like, if you self deport, we'll pay you. Yeah. Not that much money, but not that much. Yeah. Um, so I think Peter might have it, you know, if, if he's able to just like rip off $25,000 at a moment's notice, I think he'd be okay. He, yeah. You could be onto something.
So Kalinda is walking down the hall. Carrie comes to meet her and carrie's like, Hey, did you find anything about who's on board? And Kalinda is very kind of short with her, guarded in her ear answers because he's well, and he's asking about like, [00:18:00] who's on board with like the, the lawsuit they're trying to bring, they're trying to get other social media companies to come on board with Chum hum to like fight against an States.
She's like, all right, like, who else we got? Uh, is uh, sooth way in? Is Patrick Stein in? Is goog in Is? And she's like, she's like, yes, no, yes, no. Like very short answers. Yeah. Yeah. And she's like, yo, you're putting me in this horrible position. Like, if I am be doing something to benefit you, am I hurting Lockhart Gardner?
Like I work for Lockhart Gardner. And now like, and Carrie has to kind of just remind her and I guess us that like any work that's being done on this case stays with Lockhart Gardner. It's not necessarily gonna go with him, even though. Hum is apparently going with him. Well, I mean, right. It's not right, because the, the monetary gain would go to Lockhart Gardner.
Right. But the reputation game. Yeah, exactly. The reputation game goes with Carrie and Alicia. Yeah. Because they're the ones that got the win, which shows Neil that he, he's is, he gives him more like, [00:19:00] uh. More perspective to like go with them. Yes, yes. Yeah. So at the end of the day she does tell Carrie like, look, we gotta change strategy here.
Like if you change strategy, you might get some more people. Like this prior restraint thing isn't necessarily helping. And again, Kalinda is like on top of it. 'cause she's like, because she basically is like, without telling him in this moment's, like, you're, what you're doing now with the whole prior restraint, that ain't gonna work.
And lo and behold, next scene we get prior restraint is not gonna work in a familiar court. We are back in federal court with the same judges last week. And um, that prior restraint argument is being put forth without Lockhart Gardner. At this point, it's being. Put forth with, or is Care Care new Carrie there.
So like new Carrie there. He's, he's trying, he's trying his strategy. He's like, he's like, I, I'm a good boy. I thought of this prior strength thing. I'm gonna go and go ahead and like, and put it forth and judge every Tambo is [00:20:00] like, nah, bro. Have you ever had back to back judges in the episode to episode?
It's, that's know this happened a lot. If anyone, it would be Abernathy, but I can't remember. Um, yeah, but John Jeffrey Tambo is back. Yeah. And he's like, this isn't working, this is out. Alicia's like, okay, we got one more thing. She like walks in, he's like, oh my gosh, it's you. Oh my gosh, it's you. But you can definitely tell that, um, Jeffrey Tambor's court is run by Jeffrey Tambor.
Like, it's not something that, um, Alicia can like tell joke in or anything like that. Uh, but they wanna change the. Uh, like the strategy, the, the cause from prior restraint to selective enforcement, meaning that there is a gag order here, but Shum hum is being selectively targeted for enforcement, not necessarily anyone else.
So this does, this is enough to bring Patrick Edelstein onto the stand. [00:21:00] So we've got Neil Gross sitting with the, uh, with the defense, and then we have Patrick Edelstein on the stand and Carrie is doing everything he can to be like, good, like the best boy in, um. In Neil's eyes because like he's just asking, you love me now.
We love you now. Daddy will we love me now. Like he's asking just general questions that anyone could like really Google to Patrick Edelstein at the beginning, including like how many users he's ha he has. And it's like, I have 9 million users and you can just see Neil Gross go like, ha, 900 million.
That's nothing. That's nothing. Um, and he basically argues or he's trying to say like, Hey Pat, did you get any of these warrants? Like, what's going on? And we see the NSA lawyer stand up and they're like, we can't talk about these warrants. Like that is classified. And we do get a comment from the judge saying, I will agree with you, even though it's [00:22:00] very kafkaesque.
Like this is not, this is not great, but okay. Um. And basically what Carrie does is they, there's really not that much difference between what Patrick Edelstein is doing at Luth Way and what Neil Gross is doing at Humum. But Patrick Edelstein wasn't given a gag order and Neil Gross was enforcement baby.
Yeah. Can't do what you want without doing with the other, or that shows like some sort of bias. Yeah. And he like gets Patrick Edelstein even to almost lie on the stand. He is like, were you ever given a Greg order or anything like that? And he is like, no. And then they show footage from a TED Talk that he did and he's basically talking about warrants that he was given and, and all this other stuff.
So, um, in the end of the day, selective enforcement seems to be much a stronger argument here. And this gets the NSA to be like, okay, like we can't, we can talk about it, but we need to go to the skiff. Okay. I just want who skiff. I just [00:23:00] want everyone you know, and remind and also. Keep your eyes out to what a skiff looks like, um, in the show particularly.
Mm-hmm. Because a skiff is basically like the most secure place you could ever have a conversation for with the United States government. Like, so I, I don't, I don't know if you or anyone else well understand this reference at all. I, I used to watch this show on Nick and Knight when I was a kid called Get Smart.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Familiar. Okay. Yeah. So there was this, like, there was this thing in that show where if they needed to have a one-on-one conversation just by themselves, they would get into like this big. Uh, glass. Yeah. Bubble. Yes. And like, that's when, when, whenever anyone talks about a skiff, that's always what I imagine in my mind is the get smart like bubble where nobody hear anything on the outside.
It's the only two of the people on that are, are on a petition, petition, one on one side. On the other side, they talk over a [00:24:00] phone. That's like, that's what I always imagined when I hear someone talk about a skiff. It's kind of like that, but with a little bit more room. Like walls are supposed to be really thick.
You can't get any cell phone transmission. You can't, like, there's no internet. It's basically like the most secure place. You could have the N essays. Like, look, we gotta tell this judge some information. We gotta go to the skiff. It's classified. Unfortunately you guys can't come defend Alicia. Mm-hmm. Uh, and, and basically what happens is like they go away and they come back and the judge rules for the government.
With no, no explanation, no nothing. It's just like, all right, whatever they said in there, which you can't know, uh, has really, uh, made me rule for them. So sorry. Too bad for you. I mean, I like, I like Jeffrey Jet, where he is like, okay. Yeah. Is it absurd? For sure. Definitely. I mean, is it legal? Yeah, unfortunately it is.
Yeah. Sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Drop titties.
So that's how we leave. So Alicia leaves that day, goes home and gets a call from [00:25:00] Carrie and Carrie's like, oh my God, thank you so much. I can't believe you did this. And she's like, did what? I was like, you gave me a check for $140,000. He's like, I did, like, it wasn't for me. And he was like, it's from an envelope with your name on it.
Okay. Okay. And also, like Carrie, you should know, like, who is the check from? Like, look at the right of the check. And the name on the check is, um, Ivy Road Trust. And this goes in Alicia's mind. Ding, ding, ding, ding. I knew who wrote this check. Um, yep. None other than dear old mom. So she has a conversation, um, with her mom about it.
She's like, look, I heard, I heard you needed the money, and I just wanted to support you. So that's, I did what I did, and of course, I wouldn't talk to you about it or make an offer. No. I just go ahead and do it because that's, that's what moms like Veronica do. Well, and, um, this is why I questioned at the beginning, like, what did she actually hear?
Who did she know? Like, did, did I [00:26:00] didn't clock. If like Alicia said the name Carrie, I'm like, who, how did she know how to get this money to Carrie? How did she know? Like, who to make it out to? You know what I mean? Mm-hmm. Because later we learned that that check is made out to the building, like to the rental company.
So I'm like, how did this all happen? But I'm thinking too much about the show. This is what happens. Mm-hmm. And, uh, Veronica's like, you know. If you just have dinner with me, we can call it even because I met someone, he's a widower. He's an ex dog racer, and Alicia's like genuinely happy for Veronica at this moment.
I mean, especially this, she just gave her $140,000. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who's not happy is Neil Gross. 'cause Neil Gross is hearing from his West Coast lawyers, like, why did you try this in the Midwest? Like, this is not something that could win there. And Alicia brings up like, I just, I just want everyone to hear this line.
Um, when you lose with the Constitution, try money just FYI What really matter what really matters in [00:27:00] America. Yeah. Is it, is it laws and ethics and morals? No, it's money baby. Money talks. Money talks. Laws walk, baby. Yeah. Yeah. So basically they go back into court and they're like, Hey, we are suing for loss of inter in economic game, not prior restraint, not selective enforcement, but, uh, we are not making money.
Uh, the NSA is like, this is, and the court's like, oh, you're not making money. Okay, now we need to take this seriously. Yes. Yes. And the government is like, this has been cool. This is cool. And carrie's like, I just like to remind you that you can sue the government, but you have to prove that the employees were working in a discretionary manner.
And so, and Alicia's like, so show me some, like, bring me an employee that I can ask to see if they were working in a discretionary manner. And they have the NSA of course is like, well, we have to go back to the skiff. [00:28:00] We can only talk about it in the skiff. And the judge is like, no, like we're not doing this.
Not the stupid skiff, but so how much money are you suing for? And they were like, $3 billion with a capital B. Okay. Yeah. To close up the Alicia and Veronica stuff, Alicia and Veronica do have dinner. Um, it turns out that he never shows up. The widower is going back to his wife, who was never dead nice. And they have this conversation about, um, Alicia says to Veronica, which you know, is pretty, pretty, uh, oh.
Self-aware of herself. Like he never really liked me as a kid. And I was a likable kid. People liked me, but you didn't like me. Uh, and they have this touching little mom daughter moment. They hug a little too long for Veronica, but they hug nonetheless. Yeah, they're, they're both, uh, super wasted. 'cause you know, when, when they go from like, oh, the guys are coming and like, we get a smash cut to both of them obviously being, being overserved.
Like, you know, you, you know, [00:29:00] mom, you know something. You, y'all never liked me. I was a kid. Yeah. You liked Owen. You didn't like me. Yeah. And I have to say like, that was the most Irish looking Mexican restaurant I think they could ever find. Because I was like, what? They were down in Margaritas, right? Like, uh, they're just like, you know, it's like, oh, you know, if we could just go over and do it again, we do it so much better this time.
We would, it's like, like I said, they hug, they hug a little bunch. Alicias, hold on. A little bit too tight. Veronica's like it. It's like, okay, enough. Alright, we're good, dude. Next day the in court, Neil's on the stand and he is basically telling the court, Hey look, I've lost 20% of my user base. And it corresponds to the time around July 10th when the Edwards Snowden stuff came out and the NSA guy's like, okay, remember that date?
Hold on to that date for a moment. Let me bring up Simon. Simon, the grandfather. [00:30:00] So we bring this old guy up on the stage and or up on the stand and he's like, I used to use Hum to keep in contact with my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren. And it was so great. And it was so great until, until they allowed Holocaust deniers on the site.
Sound familiar? Anyone? Anyone? Twitter, anyone? Um, and. The Anas Sega is like, well, why is that important to you? And it turns out that this man is a Holocaust survivor. Um, and he like said, we organized, like we wrote to Neil Gross, we wrote to Ham and said, Hey, can you take these pages down? And they never did.
So they organized a boycott, which just so happened to happen at the same time as the Edward Snowden news coming out in July. So at the end, embassy is arguing like, you can't know if this was what the cause of this was, but something was definitely going on at that time. You can't necessarily blame us for your problems because you had other things going on that caused your user base to go down substantially.
Now, I think it [00:31:00] was here while I was like, so wait, chum Home's, like social, like is like social media now. Like what? Yeah. When did it happen? Because like, I, I feel like up to now, chum hum was like a search server, right? It was like, it was like a Google, it's like, this would be like if Google saw their own social media site.
Oh, they did. Remember Google Plus. Oh, you know, what was it like Google circles or something? There was that, yep. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. I kind of remember that now. Like that was really shortlived, but then I was just like, wait. I was like, well, okay, wait a minute. Hold on. So now, now home is social in social media, which is not, it's not a crazy thought to have.
I just think I missed that transition somewhere down the line. Yeah, I too was like, huh, okay. Okay. And also, like, when did that happen long enough for this grandfather to connect with, you know what I mean? Like Yeah. That's, that's, that's something that would take some time because he's a great grandfather.
Well, yeah. I mean, listen, hum. Home's been busy in the time. We haven't seen them in, in court. I guess. So Kalinda finds out that Chum hum has been meeting [00:32:00] with North Korean nationals, and she has to tell someone, Jason, she has to tell someone. Kara's not here. Uh, Alicia's over the, oh, nope. Can't, can't tell.
Can't talk to Alicia. Whoa. Okay. Will, there's will. It's Ville. And so he has to get involved and you can tell, like, it's a little tense, but Will's just trying to find out like, were these, who were these people? Were they government? Were they civilian? Were they pro-democracy? Not, not pro-democracy. Um, and it comes out that basically what Chum Home was doing was providing them with hardware so that they could, which again, I was like, hardware, you do hardware, like phones and stuff like that.
Okay. Whatever. Yeah, exactly. Um, they're funding them in that they could, yeah. So that they could communicate. And at Le it all ends on the fact that they, he has owed money for this equipment that he promised them. So now, and, and, and North Korea backed out of the deal. Yes. 'cause they were scared of the NSA Yes.
Uh, you know, taps or whatever. Yes. So now, [00:33:00] so now, now we got some damages, right? Like, okay. Like I did lose out on money. Real damages. Yeah. Projected $3 billion, sky, you know, thing like that. Maybe this happened. Like, no, we got some real concrete proof that I lost some money. Um, because of NSA, fears and woes has caused me to lose business.
Yes. And during this meeting, David is like very insistent, uh, knocking on the door, doing all this stuff, pulling Alicia out. Alicia's like, do you really need to pull me out right now? And he's like, well, it's about your mom. You tell me. He was like, okay, fine. Quick, quick. Alicia's coming into this office.
You gotta run. So they have a conversation in the hallway and, um, he's like, I think your mom's making some really bad choices with her money. Like, I'm really concerned because I don't know why she like invested in this real estate. I told her that real estate was bad. And also I wanna remind you that like I have access to her accounts.
So like, I could see all of these things because I am her advisor. Um, and also, [00:34:00] you know what? Don't worry about it. I'm gonna talk to her. She's coming in in a few minutes, but at least she's like, oh, okay. Hey ma story, a straight send to a straight panic. I'm like, oh, crap. Oh. So back in court now, the defense requests requests to go on a skiff.
And I just, yeah, the skiff and the gov or the judges, like the government is protesting, they're like, skiffs are only for the gov. Well, Lewis says, uh, the skiffs only, or, or protect the government, not the, not the, not the people. And Judge, judge Chamber is like, yeah, yeah. You know, you know what, you know what you were about to say.
If, if it is protects the government, it should protect the people. Right? Right. NSA lawyers like Yeah. If you insist I guess so. Go ahead. Yeah. And then we're taken to the scene in the skiff and I just again, wanna bring attention to every, the visuals. Here we are inside a brick building. We are, it is a small room.
There are no windows, there is [00:35:00] nothing there comparative to what you may have been told. A skiff is in the news recently, which is a pipe and drape black curtain with the, um, screens of Twitter and maps telling everyone where we are in the world. That's that. And photos. Photos happening in the skiff. That is not a skiff.
Where, where you could hear the swinging of golf clubs. Yes. No golf balls. This, this, this was a skiff. Just, just, just, if you're looking for like a, what's different between these two pictures? It's democracy.
So in the skiff, uh, Alicia and Carrie tell the judge about the North Korea stuff and he is like, okay, well how much money are we talking about here? Because the first request was for $3 billion. They're like, it's for $14,000. That's why I was going like 14. I say, what'd you say? It was 14,000. Like, like you speak up like it was 14,000.
Okay. But it's for, it's, listen, it's 14, [00:36:00] 14,000 is 14,000. I take $14,000 right now. If you got it, if you gave it to me, if I'm owed it, I'll take it. Uh, but it's like, so chum home, the multi probably billionaire, billion dollar company is worried about $14,000. Like it's like Yeah. Yeah. They're either $14,000.
And that was like enough for him to be like, I made my ruling. Like, you're not gonna like it. Well, yeah. Even the judge knows like, okay, yeah, I, I understand what this is all about for you guys. Like, it's not about, it's not about $14,000, it's about what Neil Gross can say out of, right. I get it. I get it.
Right. So he rules to keep the original gag order in place to make the government pay the $14,000. And then he puts an additional gag order on talking about any of the damages that were done. Right. Which basically gives Negros the opportunity to go out there and say like, we won against federal courts.
Like he mm-hmm. He can't say anything else, but he can tell the world that he is fighting the good fight and everything and at the end. He can [00:37:00] tell them because I'm under gag order. Yes. I cannot tell you how much money it was. Right. But hey, we, we feel good about it. I was like, that's, that's a really good spin.
And at the end Neil calls Alicia to congratulate her and she's like, Hey, you wanna want me to get Carrie on the line? It's like, no, I wanna talk to you. So that's where we leave that. Just to close up the David and Veronica stuff, David does end up talking to Veronica and um, he's like, don't worry. Like we can, we can undo this if it was a mistake.
And she's like, no, it's my money. I'm gonna do what I want. But David is definitely on the case here. Um, so we don't know, like do you think Chu hums gonna jump the jump with Carrie and Alicia? Like, do we, where, how do you think this leaves the relationship and Hum hum at the end of the day? I think overall Trump Home is happy with their experience here.
And this was Alicia and Carrie's doing so I think, I don't know if it was just Carrie, if Neil would be like, I don't know if I feel [00:38:00] confident jumping with just Carrie, but the fact that Alicia is there as well, I think that will let him like be a little more comfortable jumping ships. I think he will.
And wait until Will and Diane find out they're taking hum of all people. Whoa boy. Yeah. 'cause it's really, they're really a pillar of revenue for lock car. Yeah. That's the bread as well. That's the bread and butter. Yeah, that's the bread and butter of the, of the law firm. So that was our case. We also had some movement in the governorship and the family together.
Um, Peter and Eli were talking to the Chief Justice. 'cause remember Diane went to go meet with the Chief Justice a while ago and he is like, I love to support you, but you support Will and I can't stand for that. Um. And so basically and A-K-A-K-A-A-A-B, A Bs reason. Yes. That he just doesn't want a woman as a, as a Supreme Court justice.
Yes. And Peter and Eli kind of call him out in that, in this conversation about that. And, um, he's like, I just wanna Diane to explain, explain herself. And [00:39:00] in this conversation, the chief justice lets it be known that he gifted Peter with a gavel, with some Latin words on it that I'm not gonna remember. But it said, let justice be done though.
The heavens fall. Like, he's like, where's it at? I don't see it. Don't Here, like, is your office. Oh, see, what's up? What's up, babe? It's, uh, being, being mounted somewhere around here. It's one the places It's, it's, it's on route. On route. It'll be here soon. Yeah. And Peter makes it very clear that he stands behind it.
Diane and I do wanna bring up the question of why, why do we think this is Because he is like 10 toes down for Diane the entire episode. Yeah. And so like, is this, does he think he's gonna gain favor with Alicia? Does he think Diane can be manipulated at the, the Supreme Court? Like, why do we think this is you, you al you always got Alfred Peter always.
Yes. Can't, can't Peter, can't Peter just have [00:40:00] seen the genius in Diane? Sure. He's not, he just not like Diane. He's had like a couple good, like, you know, interactions with Diane. Remember when, remember when she helped him? Yes. With the mock debate? He was like, they had good interactions. Okay. He just likes Diane.
Marissa, you don't got, you don't got Is, is, is this to take something away from Will. It could be. It could be maybe, you know, could grade. It could be, it could be Alicia. It be, it could be. But as far as I am seeing, okay. I think he's being forthright and his admiration fried Diane and just really likes Diane, you know, and that just came to me.
He was like, you try to take my wife, I'll take your party at my first. Like, yeah, yeah. No, like Right. But like, you have to ask why, because throughout this, we'll talk about it as it comes up. But like, he's, he's he, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's just like, well, it's also kind of a peacocking move, right? Of like, how dare you [00:41:00] go up against what I say.
Like it's, I dunno if it's as much as about Diane. It's like, nah, bro, you misunderstand your power. Here I am. I'm about to be the governor. Okay. Like, you don't, you don't step to me, I step to you. Oh. It's so, I don't know. I, I don't know what the true motivations are about Peter, Diane. I, I, until you said that, I was just like, wow, Peter really likes Diane.
No such a good guy. Like you were talking about, you were talking about Peter's really going to bat for Diane. I was like, is she about to give him like a half a star here? No. Uh, but no, you are still in your Peter hated mode, Peter hatred mode. That's, it's awful. It's okay. It's alright. That's your proctor.
I'm consistent. I'm consistent. Uh, at the end of the, basically the judge like gets up and leaves. At this point he's like, I'm I, good luck. I'm not going to like one, you don't have my gavel out. Two, you're really like pressuring me to do this. And so he leaves and Peter and Eli have a conversation. They're like, what can we do?
It's like one, we gotta get the capital mounted and have it here the next time he's there. Two, why [00:42:00] don't you just see if you can get him what he wants. Like, can we work with Di or or with Diane to see if she will say anything at all? So Eli goes to the gift room, which. It's great. Yeah. Whole ass room.
Whole ass room for your gifts. Yeah. Well, um, before the president started taking gifts illegally, there used to be an office in the White House. Um, that ha like was all, there's a whole West Wing episode about it, about how like, what you can accept and what you can't accept and it has to be logged and like written down and all this stuff.
Um, so I'm assuming this is no one's president type of, no one's president is probably just full of McDonald's gift cards. I dunno.
So, um, Eli goes into the gift room and he's like, where's the gavel? What's going on? And the staffer in there is like, well, it's on Clerk Swap. What is this? Is this like a, is this a dupe for Craigslist? Like, [00:43:00] yes. Yes. Car swap. The hell. He's like, okay, arrange a meeting. Don't say who I am. I just say, I just want to expect, uh, inspect it.
So they do arrange a meeting, but it's at, on the campus of Northwestern. So I thought that was, I was like, okay, who? Okay, whatever. They're waiting. They're waiting and the person is late. The person is late until who walks in? None the other then the worst ex-girlfriend slash manipulator slash person ever.
Becca. Becca, bruh. The way I shout out Becca, when she came home on the screen, I was like, Becca, oh.
Sure. CCAs always entertaining time. CCA is entertaining. Yeah. She's like, I found this at a flea market. First of all, Eli's like, I should have known. Mm-hmm. I've gotten colds like slow at my stuff. It's like she says she found it at a flea market. She lets, um, Eli know she's not dating [00:44:00] Zach anymore. She doesn't have time for high school seniors.
Okay. Like, whatever. And it's so funny because they are like one upping each other. She's like, I'm in college. And he's like, yeah, well, I'm chief of staff. Like all of this stuff. You, you can't have Becca on the scene anymore without Eli. Like it needs to be a Eli Becca standoff. Like that's the only time you have beck.
'cause it's always so juicy and so gold about how much they hate each other and how much like Eli tries to serve Becca. Like, well, well, I am chief of staff. She's like, no, good for you. Well, and even so much so it's like, Eli's like, okay. Basically like, okay, little girl. Like I'm gonna take this now and I'm gonna leave.
And he thinks he's like, gotten this over Becca. Rebecca's like. Hold on one second. Hey, campus police, like I'm a student here and this guy's trying to steal my grandfather's antiques. The police guy point Becker because all the campus police guy cares about is protecting the student. He doesn't care about protecting Eli in any way, shape or form.[00:45:00]
Um, so point, Becca and Eli gets on the phone to call Alicia to tell her about the everything that's happening. So with that, with the gavel part where it's at, Eli wants to go talk to Diane to have her do an interview with, um, Mandy post, our good friend Mandy Post. Um, and he's doing his best, like, like, I don't know if chief of Staff is also like mob boss because he's like, I, she's like, you want me to announce swell?
And he's like, no. Just his past actions, like mm-hmm. I just want you to put the past behind. I, I want you to say you don't like Will's behavior. And then he's like, Peter really needs you to do this. And Diane even like, reads it as like, is this like, what are you telling me? Yeah. Like, listen girl, like this, this is make or break right here.
You you, it's either shit or off the pot. Like, you, you want this judgeship you gotta do. [00:46:00] Yeah. Yeah. Uh, we also get a little scene of the kids at home, which, you know, is always, ugh. But it was kind of funny this time because Nisa is calling Zach like 800 gazillion times because they're, Becca is back in some sort of way.
And he's like, I know. She's like, how does NEA know about Becca? Like, what I, I, they didn't connect that dot for me. And I was like, wait, how does NEA know about this? Like, what, what's happening? Do Eli calla, like, what's happening now? And like Zach is like, I am not dating Becca at like, phone s the girl Issa.
Stand. Stand up. Issa Issa. You better than this. Yeah. I mean, like, I have a lot to say about like what they do to Issa in this situation. 'cause one they turn her into a picnic girl. Mm-hmm. Second comes up later in the episode. Um, but here we also see that Veronica took, Veronica took Grace shopping and Grace is explaining to Veronica who's on the phone.
And [00:47:00] I put in my notes Veronica and her culturally sensitive language because like, I, I thought it was just an interesting moment because Grace corrects her, is like, you can't say black, you have to say African American. And also she's Somali, so I don't know. Yeah. Back and forth. Um. And we, we get to learn a little bit more about Alicia, that she wore some racy things, but she had to, you know, sneak into her mom's car and change before she did all that.
And Zach is not liking this like, shopping trip that happened because he says to Grace, like, why are you dressing like this? I thought you were religious. And Veronica comes counters and says, Jesus wants grace to look the best. And I need them to fix Zach's face when he looks at grace all the time now.
'cause it really keeps giving me the, the immy Willies of like, stop, like she is your sister. Like, yeah. Yeah. Your look should be more of disgust. Not of like, oh, like, [00:48:00] yeah. Grace. What's up? Uh, Zomm needed to fix his face for real. Yeah. Disturbing me. Yeah. Uh, Alicia does take some time to talk to Zach about Becca, and, um, the question comes up like, well, how did Becca get the gavel?
And we see the scene of Becca face. Well, Skyping, I guess at the time we didn't have like FaceTime at the time, Skyping with Grace as Grace is learning about makeup and everything like that. And so I guess their BFFs or like definitely being Grace is definitely being manipulated by Becca in this situation.
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I love that twist. I was like, oh, oh, oh. It was, it was Grace. Like how, how's that conversation come about? Yes. Like, hey, oh hey girl, is that a gavel behind you? Oh my God, that's so cool. Why don't you, um, why don't you come bring that to me? Oh my God. Like what? Why I will trade you like five hours of makeup tutorials if you give me that [00:49:00] gavel behind you.
And like Grace, you are, you are Christian Grace, right? You hear stealing from your pops. Like what? I feel like there's a commandment that pertains to this, at least two of them. What would Jesus do? Really? Right on. What would Jesus do? She probably got one of those bracelets. Wwjd. I want to wear one of those.
Not because I was a Jesus guy, but I was like, I don't know. Everybody's wearing them. Everybody's wearing them. Yeah. Yeah. I was definitely like, definitely in teen club at in church at the time. Mm-hmm. And I grew up Catholic and I was like, oh my God, this is like the one thing that unites us with the rest of the Christians, because Christians don't necessarily see Catholics as Christians.
So I was like, oh my God, I can like wear this and talk to my Baptist friends. Uhhuh. Yeah. So weird. Such a weird time. Such a weird time. It's enough connection, right? Yes. Yes. Before, before we could put all of [00:50:00] our, uh, religious and political beliefs on a social media site, there was before we voluntarily gave up all of our information.
Yes. This is how you signal to people back in the day. I mean, there was even like the, the, the bracelets evolved past that. There was like bracelets that signal certain things. I think there it comes up in either an episode of the Good Wife or something later, but like bracelets or maybe it did about your sexual Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it was like there was a boat involved or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Bracelets mean a lot. I knew that. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like, and now we wear, some people wear red hats too, to show their beliefs about things. Well, I mean, everyone has the right, but Yeah, exactly.
You got your rights. Yeah. Hopefully you keep 'em. Hopefully you keep them. So true. That's, uh, enough of that now moment of silence. Uh, okay. So Diane ends up giving [00:51:00] the interview to. Mandy post, and I thought this was interesting 'cause Mandy is really kind of pressing like ki not pressing, but like from a journalist perspective, like giving her like softball questions, really kind of like raising this whole will thing up for her and saying like, don't you harbor like any resentment, uh, of this and talking about 10 toes down, Diane is 10 toes.
And if she could borrow some more toes down, um, because she is not turning on will, she is like, listen, that man has won so many legal awards. He is the reason we survived bankruptcy. Like, I am not turning on him. And then Mandy post is like, oh, I didn't hit record. How would you look at that? I wasn't even recording.
So this, this really just feels like Eli sent Mandy in there. To like get the interview he needed and she's like, just seeing if Diane will take the bait. Yes. And it's like, okay, you, you're not gonna play [00:52:00] ball here. Like I was just testing you to see if you would. So like, and you're obviously not going to like a warm up.
Yeah. You're not, you're not gonna gimme what Eli promised that you would've give me. Which is like throwing your partner under the bus. I just kind of wanted to check to see if you were going to, but you're not. So it's a waste of my time. Yeah. Yeah. And Eli is pissed. He's like, listen, I like set this up for you.
I did all this stuff. Why won't you just do this? Why won't you make this any easier for us? Mm-hmm. It's just like, look, I'm not gonna turn on Will. Like that's, that's just not gonna happen. So then they're like, okay, if Diane's not gonna change, we're just gonna pressure the ju the chief justice. And so Peter and Eli have a larger con a another conversation with the chief JU justice and is like, look.
Yeah. Al also important to note in the Eli Diane conversation, he basically. Makes it. Oh yeah. Like this is it, this is the end of the line. Yeah. Like, if you're not gonna do this, we're gonna find someone else to do the, to do the damn thing. So yeah. You gotta really think about if you, if if Will's [00:53:00] worth your judgeship is basically like the, the, he gives kind of an he without actually doing it.
He gives an ultimatum, yes, you do this, or the judge is off the line. Yes. Like you, you're not gonna be the judge. Yes. And they give it one more shot with the chief justice. My nose is so itchy today. Every, if you're watching, um, on YouTube, I'm so sorry. Um, okay. They talk to the chief justice and they're like, you are going to have to reconsider.
And he's like, I have really deep concerns. They're like, keep your concerns, do yourself. And they're like, go ahead. Well, and Eli, Eli does the perfect, he's like, okay. Like, listen, you just have to, you, you have to, you know, reconsider. He is like, like, I don't think so. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then Peter.
Big mob boss. Pete's like, all right, I'm at, handle this myself. I guess like walks in, he is like, listen, yeah, like listen here you little, you little effer. Like I didn't wanna have to do this, but you just shut the hell up. Alright. Like, this [00:54:00] is my choice. I'm gonna make it whether you like it or not. Effer.
So keep your, keep your damn opinion to yourself. Which is like, alright, why would you do this in the first place? I mean, I guess we wanted, we wanted do it a kind of like fresher, friendly way at first. Like see if we can like be cool about it. But now it's just like, just basically like he gathered him up by the collar, like, listen, like you should, well, and I, it's like, you know, you look for, I at least look for moments that Peter has changed.
Right. Like I am like, show me the glimmer of hope. But then he comes in with shit like, excuse me, with stuff like this play. It was a service. It was against a bad guy. You, you don't take that into consideration. No. He did it against the sexist guy who just doesn't want Diane on the Supreme Court 'cause she's a woman.
Okay. But Yout take care of your ation. He did the evil for the good. He did it for the good. Did he though, did he though? We just got done talking about his motivations. Did he though, did he though, you know what I mean? Um, but like, this again, I guess works because [00:55:00] Eli makes a phone call to Diane and says, Hey look, you don't have to make, or, uh, gets to Diane's assistant.
'cause Diane was not available. This is like, she doesn't have to do the interview again. And we see Mandy post walking out of Diane's office. So the interview has already happened. Yikes. So, so I guess, uh, I guess the ultimatum was enough to kind of sway Diane, but I kind of wish you would've gotten more lead up to like her making the decision to, to throw will under the bus.
Like, you know, do you think that's what happened? That she threw him under the bus? Yeah, that's the implication I got from that whole thing of like, uh, oh, too late Eli. She's already done the bad, the, the thing that yeah, she needed to do know. So just for that reason that you, that you were questioning it, I wish you could have gotten more of Diane's thought process going into that.
Yeah. To be like, should, like, should I do this? Maybe even like a talk with Will to be like, yo, bro. [00:56:00] So like, what do you want me to say? What do you want me to do? Yeah. Like, can we work on something I want, I can say to like, kind of throw you under the bus and kind of not like, what are, what are you cool with me saying?
Like, how, how, how can I get this both ways of, I give Eli what they want, but I also don't piss you off. Okay. Sorry, I just had a brain. Yeah. Okay. Remember how we were questioning, we were questioning Peter's motives, right? Mm-hmm. I really do think it is to take Diana away from Will because he was so happy that Alicia was leaving.
He was so ecstatic. He was just like, you're not gonna go down with the ship baby. Like, like I, okay. I, so, and also like he knows that if Diane is away from Will there, like, it will ensure the success of Alicia so that way he can be like, I did this for you. You know what I mean? Like [00:57:00] what if feels was like, oh, oh, bad on me, Peter, you just gave me Gardner and Associates all to myself.
Oh, what bad thing you just did to me. I know, but I was just like getting to his thinking of like he, because he was like a little too excited for me when he, when Alicia was like. I'm leaving, I'm starting my own firm. He was, well, yeah, obvi obviously that was, that was because she was gonna get away from Will like that, that, I don't think there's any doubt there.
He's like, thank God you're not gonna be working with Will Gardner anymore. Uh, so you, there's, you think, you think, you think Peter just wanted to turn the knife even more? Yes. And be like, like, I got my wife away from you now, now I'm gonna get your partner away from you. Yeah, I do listen. Possibly, possibly.
I, I will We ever really hear that logic? I don't know. Well, yeah, we'll see. To your point of like knowing what, what, um, Diane, we're thinking, listen, we're, we're both writing the show right now. And that's not, that's not, that's not a bad thing because it's something we love to do a lot like you especially.
But um, yes. I don't know. Uh, [00:58:00] well, okay, so we had a lot of calls in this episode. A lot of phone calls happening and that leads us to the last little part, not little kind of big kind of maybe ongoing. Um, introduction here to the NSA tapping Lockhart Gardner basically. Um, so this whole episode opens kind of, this is one thing I do love about the Good Wife and the good fight is they will show you like things in terms of like how things ha At first I was like, what am I watching?
And then I was like, oh, they are tapping people. Oh, and then they're drawing a line and putting things together. Oh, oh, this must be the NSA. So I was like able to kind of see how the NSA works to the most, the most of my visibility at least. Um, so we get introduced to two NSA guys. There's two guys listening to tapes, um, that have to do with Lockhart Gardner, and we learned that Lockhart Gardner was taped or [00:59:00] tapped by the NSA back when they took the case about Boula Culp.
Did I say say it right? Doula, LPLP Culp Doula. But doula Gulp. Yes. So this is what starts the whole thing. Um, and they're like listening to stuff from the past. One of them looked really familiar to me. Jason? Yeah. Mr. Uh, Zach Woods is the actor's name, uh, of one of the Ns, NSA Bros, as I will call them. Uh, Zach Woods you might recognize from later seasons of the office.
He was Gabe, uh, creepy Gabe as I'll call him 'cause that's kind of what he wants in that show. And played to Perfect Effect by Zach Woods, I should know, which a really great character over there. Also, you might notice him from Silicon Valley. Yes. Also kind of played this kind of creepy, creepy character guy.
Uh, he is really good at that type of characterization. Um, forgot his name also. They're called, but it doesn't matter. Um. But yeah, a really great kind of comedic, uh, [01:00:00] actor who, who does good work, I think. Yes, yes. Um, other, other NA guy. You're not famous enough. Yeah. We don't know you yet. We don't know you yet.
Yeah, not yet, but I like, not yet Marissa. You're giving us some hope. Yeah. You'll get their other NA get there. You never know. Or you're thriving somewhere else in life. Who knows? Yeah. Yeah. Uh, but it turns out that these guys have pretty much heard a lot of the calls that happen in this episode. So they overhear the call of, when Carrie calls Kalinda to say, Hey, we're suing the Ns.
Like he literally says out loud, we are suing the NSA. And they're like, whoa. Like, uh oh, what, what, what? And what's So like, what I enjoy about this part of the storyline is it does give like internet culture some more. Credibility or something like that, because these two guys are definite bro, right? Like they're just definite internet, bro.
They, they got the goat meme going on. Ah, they got all that was I, I totally [01:01:00] forgotten about that. And so I was like, that was a thing like back in those days of like, yes, this, like, these weird kind of, it was kind of meme culture bef, it was the beginning of meme culture. I think it was like vines, like when Vine came out and all that other stuff.
Yeah. It was just like goats vines like that, that, that passed is entertainment back in the day. So simple, such simple times. Uhhuh, uh, so yes, uh, they're internet bros, but they're also very savvy because once they hear this, they're like, oh, can we continue listening on what we were listening on? If there's active litigation against the NSA.
So let me bring this to the systems admin. Let's talk about it. Um, right now, this is STEM admin is like, okay. Here's the deal, continue listening, but mark anything as a possible omit a 25 18 or whatever, a 21 of those. Um, and also like, have you heard of any of the lawyers committing anything illegal? And they're [01:02:00] like, like what?
How illegal? Like anything illegal. Like any, any illegal activity. Like, well, what is gonna be First Lady? So we're bound to hear some illegal stuff at some point. It's the state of Illinois. This really peaks the interest of this, of this, this admin guy's like, oh, the governor, the governor's in this now.
Okay. Oh, that, that definitely puts us, I think on the, on the priority list now, because before it was just like, ah, you two idiots, whatever. And then it was like governor's wife, you say, huh, yeah. Huh. Now we're gonna take us a little more seriously. So they end up talking to the, their counsel, the legal counsel at the NSA.
But this guy also looked familiar. I think he's been in a few things. Yeah. Uh, probably. I'm sure I did not look the NSA Yeah, you did. Oh, no. This, this guy that I put in here was the NSA lawyer guy that was fighting in quote. Oh, in the other case, not the lawyer for the NSA. No, that was Brendan Brown from, uh, Marissa.
You might notice [01:03:00] him from Chicago Med. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, that, that was the lawyer guy with, uh, judge Jeffrey Tabor. Copy that. Not this guy. I didn't look up this guy that we're talking about This guy, this NSA lawyer, um, you know, listens to them. They do a really good job in this explaining like a two, what, what type of warrants they're working with.
And there's a two hop warrant, which basically means that they can listen to the accused and then people two steps away. Yeah. Two degrees of separation From the target. Yeah, from the target. Um, and they're like, okay, well while this brings like the governor into that orbit, we're gonna need to have like a, another connection, a more recent connection to terrorism, because this case was like two years ago.
We're gonna need something more recent to really get into the governor's mansion to really hear those conversations. Um, so not only have they listened, they they heard, they heard that the fourth years were leaving. They heard the conversations, um, between David and and Diane at the, the start. They also [01:04:00] picked up on the 12 calls.
Oh, Brooke from Issa's house to Alicia's house. Nisa stand up girl. Stand up. It's the 12 calls. And, um, but they're not like, they're like, not because it's Nisa, but because NI's dad. Is a Somali national and someone that's on the list, basically. Yes. And so I'm assuming because niece's, like either a house phone or cell phone is in her father's name, this is what really Yes.
Really peaks this in up until their concerns, which is hilarious, but not because again, what why are they doing, there was this whole thing when Nissa came on, on the, um, on the stage as they say about like her being Muslim and her, like all of this conversation about. Discrimination and all of that. And then they basically like turned her character into, I hope, I hope they do some redemption [01:05:00] here, but I was just like, this is not fun.
Like, I'm not enjoying what they did here. I mean, I thought it was a good like satirical jab at things of like, oh, they, there are calls from a Somali national to, to a lawyer connected to, uh, you know, a a a person of suspicion. And it's like, actually no, it was just, well, yeah, because go a teenage, a weird teenage love like, you know, issue.
Like, it's not actually what you think it is, which says a, which is a good, like just poke at like the government of like, you idiots. Like yeah. You have no idea what's going on. That's true because they go and they listen to like some of the voicemails that were left and it's just me crying. Oh man. Oh, but this, these calls were enough to expand it to a three hop.
So now we have this like lighthouse of the NSA kind of spinning around our characters where, what it's gonna highlight who it's gonna highlight. We don't know, but everyone's kind of like in, in the [01:06:00] hops, right? So this like, everyone gonna hop away this, this kinda opens the door to like surveil Peter without like Yes.
Making him the target of anything. Because now, now that it's a three hop, we can, we can listen to the context of the context of Danny Mar Watt and his lawyers. So now we can just listen on know what, where Peter's Peter's, uh, conversations are. Uh, just, we don't have to, we don't have to like, make a big probe.
It's just like, Hey, we just picked this up because he was on three hop warrant. We weren't targeting him, but we just found it anyway. And we know about Peter and his people getting surveilled. It's been a whole thing in, uh, two, season two, right? Yes. Season two. Yes. Yes. One or two. Yeah, maybe Zach will figure it out and see, maybe will figure out his, maybe he like Peter Brown.
Yeah. Like Peter Brown will fix it all. Um, so yeah. Uh, more into the world of phone tapping. Um, and without saying too much, these NSA bros and this whole conceit will stick around. It'll be pretty fun too. Like it is a 'cause they [01:07:00] kind of get in, they kind of get involved and interwoven into the dramatics.
So great. 'cause they're, yeah. They were like, we were kind of getting into it like, we don't wanna Yeah. Like we don't wanna go. And then I loved how the, the one guy was like, I can't tell if you are the smartest people I have ever known, or the, the dumbest. I'm just like, yeah. It's like they get, they get wrapped up into it.
Like it's their stories. Like, what, what are we doing now? The young and litigious. Like, what, what, what will we get up to this week as the legal world turns? Yeah. So it's gonna be something that pops up, uh, here and there again throughout, uh, this season. And I'm not sure like maybe even the rest of the show, but it's, it's something that will come back.
Um, yes. So yes, that's, uh, that's our episode. Uh, Marissa, do you wanna tell good folks where they can find you and what you're up to right now? Yes.
